Red Cross: Use caution during wildfire season

With dry conditions persisting and the wind continuing to blow, the threat of wildfire is strong in the Hutchinson County area.
The Eastern Texas Panhandle Chapter of the American Red Cross urges everyone to be cautious with open flames.
The smallest spark can start a fire and that spark can be driven by winds to create a wildfire. Local citizens need to be prepared against wildfire by creating a 30 to 100 foot safety zone around their home.
The following are steps that can be taken to reduce potential exposure to flames and radiant heat:

Council receives CVS pharmacy re-plat

The Borger City Council has received a re-plat requested by a new pharmacy coming to town.
During its regular meeting Tuesday, the council acted to receive the re-plat of Lots 4-11, Block 24, Unit 4, Thompson Addition, containing 1.303 acres, to be known as Lot 4R, Block 24, Unit 4, Thompson Addition, and a physical address of 230 N. Cedar Street.

Get your lawn and garden ready for spring

Spring is the best time to prepare your lawn and garden for the warmer months.
Marlin Thomas, who has been with Thomas Greenhouse since its opening in 1976, says that the best thing to do is “prepare your garden.”
Most common mistakes in preparing your garden include not fertilizing correctly and either overwatering or underwatering, especially when it comes to your grass. Fertilizing and watering are key to having a healthy green lawn. Some people water every day and that is not necessary.

Communications a vital part of BPD

When it comes to the Borger Police Department and other local agencies in the area, they rely heavily on the communications department to keep them informed.
The communications section of the BPD is on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to the 2010 annual report submitted to the City of Borger by the BPD.
The department provides radio and phone communications 911 assistance, pre-arrival medical help and dispatch services for all emergency services within Hutchinson County.

This is what a MS patient has to live through every day of their life. Because of these hurting people local citizens will be walking toward a world free of MS on Saturday, April 30, at Crockett Elementary School.

Borger Golfers still on top in after three rounds

The cooler weather didn’t affect golfers from Borger High School on Monday during the third round of the District 1-3A Golf Tournament at Hidden Hills Golf Course in Pampa as the Borger Boys Varsity extended their team lead over second place Perryton by 40 strokes by shooting a third round score of 338 to take their three round total to 314-306-338-958.

Preview of Summer Soccer Camp to take place this Thursday

The Hutchinson County Soccer Association has teamed up to host the week-long “British Soccer Camp” during the week of 7/18/11 – 7/22/11 at The Soccer Fields, Veta Street, Borger, TX, 79007.
The camp will run Monday through Friday and each child will be coached by a member of Challenger’s team of 1,000 British soccer coaches flown to the USA exclusively to work on these programs. Challenger Sports will hold over 3,000 British Soccer camps this summer and will coach over 120,000 players between the ages of 3 and 19.

Beverly June Callahan

FRITCH - On Tuesday, March 29, 2011, Beverly June Callahan was met by husband Hughie, son Thomas, daughter Geraldine Adams and two grandsons, Michael Coates and Allen Myers when she went home to be with the Lord.
Interment will be at the National Cemetery in Fort Huachuca, Arizona, later. Cremation is under the direction of Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch.

Lady Bulldogs defeat Perryton 19-13 in district softball play

April 4, 2011

On Saturday afternoon the Borger Lady Bulldogs got into the District 1-3A win column by out-slugging the Perryton Rangerettes 19-13 up in Perryton.
Lady Bulldogs Head Coach Steve Watkins was pleased with his team’s performance, saying, “Both teams were hitting and making plays; we just made more. I am proud of them, they fought and scratched and got ‘er done. We finally hit the ball well, executed plays and made the routine plays on defense.”
Seniors Brittany Thomas and Lyndsey Barrow each had homeruns in the game with the whole team doing a good job at the plate, according to Watkins.

Plainsmen win two over El Paso CC to even weekend series

After struggling on Friday in their first two games with El Paso CC, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen bounced back on Saturday to get two wins to even the series winning 13-3 and 14-11. Getting the win on the mound for the Plainsmen were Eric Ramirez and Manny Matos. The Plainsmen are now 9-7 in WJCAC play where they are tied with Midland College for fourth place.
