West Texas High Comanches win game one over Nazareth in best of three

West Texas A & M University was the place to be yesterday if you wanted to see the West Texas High School Comanches on the diamond. The Tribe was the visiting team in their first of a best of three series against the Nazareth Swifts. The Comanches are vying for the Bi-District trophy and a chance to move on to the Area round against Clarendon. WT High took control of their destiny in game one with a 6-1 win over the Swifts.

Father charged in death of infant

Hutchinson County Sheriff's office called with an update Thursday morning in regards to the death of three-month-old, Dustin Athey in Fritch.
Deputies from the office responded to a call at a home in the Sanford Estates housing development on Tuesday night April 19 around 8:20 p.m.

Naomi Jewell Harper

May 4, 2011

Naomi Jewell Harper was born near Elmwood, OK, on March 27, 1918, one of twelve children born to John Byron and Minnie Belle (Stapp) Simpson, early pioneers in Beaver County.
During her childhood Naomi attended South Flat School, a one-room schoolhouse that was located near the family homestead.

Officers commended for work in recent homicide case

Three Borger police officers received special recognition for their work in a recent homicide investigation in the City of Borger.
Sgt. Jerod Carr, Lt. Jason Whisler, and Officer Marcel Hajjar received commendation from Police Chief Jimmy Adams during the Borger City Council meeting Tuesday.
Two weeks ago, Chief Adams said an incident happened in Borger that put the community on edge. During the investigation that followed, he said there were officers who went above and beyond in the line of duty.

Kathy Ryan Fund working to train fire and rescue workers

There is a special endowment fund that has been going strong for about two years in honor of a local woman who lost her life working to save others in the major wildfires that hit the Borger area in 2006.
Attorney Joe Lovell, who works with the Kathy Ryan Rural Fire and Rescue Endowment Fund, spoke to the Borger Rotary Club Tuesday afternoon. Also attending were Tim Newsom, Nita Dyslin, and Pam Ayers, Ryan’s daughter.

JMG participates in special Mother’s Day project

Borger ISD takes part in the JMG program, also known as The Junior Master Gardener.
According to a press release, JMG is growing Good Kids by encouraging them to have a passion for learning, success, and service through s unique gardening education.
JMG offers curriculum that covers a broad range of horticulture and environmental education topics.

Borger’s Pool state bound in two events

West Texas High’s Terrence Bonds qualifies for state in 300m hurdles

After earning a trip to the State Track Meet on Monday, by dominating the girls discus competition, Borger senior J’Cee Pool qualified for a second event at the state meet by taking second place in the girls’ shotput at the 3A Region I Track Meet in Lubbock on Tuesday.
On Pool’s second to last throw, the senior reached a mark of 40-5 to finish behind Kebbeh Darpolor of Pecos, who had a throw of 41-10 1/2.

Lady Plainsmen open Regional Tournament play tomorrow

Tomorrow the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen will make their first appearance in post-season play when they compete in the NJCAA Region V West Softball Tournament in Lubbock.
The Lady Plainsmen clinched a berth into the regional tournament this weekend by winning three of four games against Clarendon College.
The Lady Plainsmen will open the tournament by taking on the Howard College Lady Red Hawks at 11:00 a.m.
The winner will take on Midland College tomorrow afternoon at 5:00 p.m.

Playoff games get underway tonight through Saturday

Tonight starts four days of local high school softball and baseball team action, with teams looking to make noise in the post season.
The West Texas High Comanches will begin their best of three 1A Bi-District round series with the Nazareth Swifts tonight at 5:00 p.m.
All three games will be played at Wilder Park at West Texas A&M in Canyon.
Game two will take place on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. with game three following, if necessary.

LINN Energy donates $106,000 to FPC Softball program

A couple of months ago, representatives from LINN Energy came before the Borger EDC Board of Directors to introduce themselves and share some of their ideas for what they planned to do in the region. They were preparing to increase their presence within the Borger community, which includes the building of a new regional office.
Being a relatively new business within the Borger community, Jim Boden of LINN Energy told the EDC board during that meeting that one of the goals of the company is to be a great neighbor in the community by showing its support to local organizations and charities.
