Two cities see rise in sales tax allocations

The Cities of Borger and Stinnett saw an increase in their sales tax allocations for the month of April 2011, while Sanford and Fritch saw a decrease.
Texas Comptroller Susan Combs distributed $600.1 million in local sales tax allocations on Friday, up
5.8 percent compared to May 2010. So far this calendar year, local sales tax allocations to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts are up 7.1 percent compared to a year ago.

Game 1: Borger hangs on to beat Pecos 5-4

WOODROW-Bad defense can hurt you, but good defense can bail you out.
Friday evening the Borger Bulldogs learned both lessons in game one of their 3A Area Round playoff series with the Pecos Eagles at Lubbock Cooper High School.
Through seven innings the Bulldogs committed five errors on the field yet were able to pull two key double plays, along with senior catcher Brandon Garcia throwing out two base runners, as Borger was able to hang on for a 5-4 win.

Borger's J'Cee Pool wins 3A State Title in discus

Beginners luck?
In her first year throwing the discus at the high school level, Borger senior J’Cee Pool will graduate as the top girl’s discus thrower in Class 3A winning the state title on Friday morning with a throw of 140-00 at the Texas State Track and Field Meet in Austin.
Pool reached the 140-00 mark on her fourth throw of the day, which placed her nearly six feet ahead of the second place finisher Olivia Williams of Nevada Community.
Pool’s gold medal in the discus will be a first in the Borger girls track program.

Bonds takes third at state in 1A long jump

Friday afternoon West Texas High senior Terrence Bonds came in third place in the Class 1A Long Jump at the Texas State Track and Field Meet in Austin.
Bonds will compete in the 1A 300m hurdles tomorrow.

Borger’s Clement signs to play for Wayland Baptist

After a season where he tore up opposing defenses on his way to earning District 1-3A MVP honors, Borger High School senior Shavoyiea Clement signed his letter of intent to play football for Wayland Baptist University on Friday morning.
An 3A All-State honorable mention in 2010, Clement played a big role in helping the Bulldogs claim the District 1-3A title and advancing to the regional playoff round by rushing for just over 1,800 yards.
What attracted Clement to Wayland is the size saying, “I didn’t want to go to a big school and when I went to visit Wayland I loved it.”

Wichita spoils the Sox first game with 5-3 defeat

AMARILLO, TX – The inaugural game of the Amarillo Sox was a close one, even causing extra innings, but the Wichita Wingnuts spoiled the festivities with a 5-3 defeat of the Sox on Thursday night in front of 3,042 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium
Sox reliever Tyler Pearson (0-1) got the loss, allowing the two go-ahead runs in the 10th inning. Wingnuts reliever Cephas Howard (1-0) got the win, striking out the only batter he faced. Wichita closer Josh Dew retired all three batters he faced in the 10th for the save.

Katherine Ann Basham

Funeral services for Katherine Ann Basham, 54, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Minton Memorial Chapel in Borger with Rev. Paul Monohon, Retired Pastor officiating. Cremation and burial at Westlawn Memorial Park will follow at a later date under the direction of Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Kathy was born in Borger and was a Corrections Officer with the TDCJ Neal Unit in Amarillo. She had been in Corrections for the past 14 years in Colorado as well as Texas.
She married Larry Don Basham Aug. 6, 1988, in Skellytown, and they had lived in Fritch for the past three years.

Election time is almost here!

Election time is almost here!
The general election for the Borger City Council and the Borger ISD Board of Trustees is set to be held this Saturday, May 14, 2011.
The polling places for this year’s election are as follows:
Precinct 11 – Borger Middle School, 1200 South Florida
Precincts 33 and 42 – Paul Belton Learning Center, 800 North McGee
Precincts 14 and 23 – Fairlanes Baptist Church, 3000 Fairlanes Boulevard
The polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day.

Scott Mills running for BISD board of trustees

Scott Mills is running for a seat on the Borger ISD Board of Trustees.
Mills has lived in Borger for 30 years. He graduated from the University of Nebraska and moved to Borger driving his 1972 Ford packed to the brim with all of his belongings on Jan. 11, 1981.
“I was single and straight out of college and went to work for Phillips Petroleum with the thought I would be transferred within three or four years,” he said. “Thirty years later I find myself, by choice, still living in Borger.”

Borger’s Paulsell tied for ninth after one round

Bad weather delayed the start of the 3A State Golf Tournament at Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin until Thursday afternoon.
Once play got underway, Borger High School senior Will Paulsell shot a 75 to put him tied for ninth place in the tournament.
Sean Romero of Texarkana Pleasant Grove leads the field after one round with a 71. Perryton’s Hunter Wade sits one stroke ahead of Paulsell tied for seventh with a 74.
The second round of the state golf tournament was scheduled to start this morning.
