Borger man indicted for capital murder

A Borger man has been indicted for capital murder.
On Thursday, a Hutchinson County Grand Jury met to consider evidence in the April 20, 2011, slaying of Lois Kimbrell. Mrs. Kimbrell, 97, was found dead in her Borger home on the morning of April 21 by a Meals on Wheels volunteer. She suffered multiple stab wounds as well as blunt force head trauma.

Helton takes third at College National Finals Rodeo

This past weekend, Frank Phillips College sophomore Logan Helton earned a third place finish in bull riding at the 2011 College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo.
Helton, a Pampa native studying agriculture business at FPC, placed third in the nation behind Cody Teel of Sam Houston State University and Doug Vowkaw of Hill College.
Aboard the bull Cassius Clay, Helton split fourth and fifth place with a 77 in round two, then came back and won the short go-round with the highest mark of the week, scoring an 84 aboard Ty Rinaldo’s bull, Freaking Wild.

Sox mascot to be introduced during game on Friday

AMARILLO – The Amarillo Sox announced that they will unveil the new team mascot during the Sox game on Friday, June 24 against the Shreveport-Bossier Captains when they begin a three-game series at 7:05pm.
The as-of-yet unnamed mascot will make its first appearance prior to the game and will entertain fans throughout that night’s game. The mascot’s name will be announced during its introduction on Friday.

1928-2011
Billie Jo was born to Litchford and Cora Sparks on April 5, 1928, in Spearman, Texas. She left this earth May 28, 2011, to be reunited with her husband, parents, brothers and sisters. She was a fabulous bridge player, loved dominoes and playing the piano, and enjoyed a good laugh. She had a feisty, loving spirit and was adored by all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her husband Charles, a longtime local grocer; parents, brothers, Aubie, James, Roscoe, and W.E. Sparks; and sisters, Opal Boxford, Owassa Valdez, and Shirley Talley.

Council approves Texas Gas Service resolution

Rate schedules and tariffs proposed by the Texas Gas Service have received approval from the Borger City Council.
A resolution approving the schedules and tariffs was finalized by the council Tuesday. The resolution pertains to a limited rate filing that allows TGS to implement an increase in rates pursuant to the Cost of Gas Adjustment (COSA) clause that was previously approved in 2008.

Fritch making plans for a summer celebration

The City of Fritch is making plans for a summer celebration!
KFDA News Channel 10, the local CBS affiliate, has selected Fritch as one of its stops on its “Summer Celebration Tour.” The city will be featured on Friday, July 22, the last day of its week-long tour of area towns.
The event will take place on Robey Street between the Lake Meredith Aquatic and Wildlife Museum and Fritch City Hall. Robey will be closed to traffic and booths will be placed up and down the block. Local churches, organizations, clubs, and businesses are invited to set up food and game booths for the celebration.

Women’s Air Race Classic participants stop at local airport

Participants in the Women’s Air Race Classic made a stop at the Hutchinson County Airport Wednesday evening. The women are traveling across the country in a race competing for competing for cash prizes and awards. Among those making the stop at the airport were, left, Barbara Harris-Para of Pinehurst, N.C.; and right, Sarah Morris and Leah Hetzel of Jacksonville, Fla. The race, which started in Iowa City, Iowa, will conclude in Mobile, Ala. this Friday. For more information and photos, see pg. 5 of today’s edition.

WJCAC adopts Men’s and Women’s Rodeo as an official conference sport

At the Spring Meeting, the Western Junior College Athletic Conference adopted Men’s and Women’s Rodeo as a WJCAC Conference Sport.
Within the conference, six of the 10 conference colleges currently participate in rodeo. The six colleges include Clarendon College, Frank Phillips College, Howard College, New Mexico Junior College, Odessa College, and Western Texas College.

Schneider leads USA U16 team to gold medal

Former Phillips Lady Blackhawk and Borger Lady Bulldogs Head Basketball coach Jill Schneider guided the USA U16 girls to the championship of the 2011 FIBA Americas Tournament in Mexico on Saturday by defeating Brazil, 73-40.
For Schneider, it’s her fifth gold medal, as she won four as a player, but lost out on earning one in the 1980 Olympics when the USA boycotted those games.
This is her first gold medal as a coach.

Amarillo Bulls announce 2011-12 schedule; home opener set for October 1st

AMARILLO–The Amarillo Bulls, proud members of the North American Hockey League, announced on Monday their 2011-2012 schedule.
This year’s schedule consists of 60 contests including four at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota as well as 28 home and 28 away games. One of the many highlights of the schedule is the Bulls home opener set for Saturday, October 1st at 7 pm against the New Mexico Mustangs at The Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
