The life of Teresa Reed: miraculous

An exceptionally long life seems almost like a miracle. The life of Teresa (Slavin) Reed of the Potawatomi National tribe is a good example.
On December 6, 2011, Teresa will be 109. Mrs. Reed is originally from Pampa, and Teresa spent most of her life teaching children. She taught in Pampa elementary schools until she retired at age 70.
But, she wasn’t finished, heading to the Southwest to teach on an Indian Reservation. Teresa continued operating a motor vehicle at 103 and lived at home until she was 105, when she was moved to Wheeler Nursing Center.

Coker to head up Fritch Police Department

The Fritch Police Department has a new chief starting work this Monday.
Bobby Lamb, City Manager for Fritch, announced Kirk Coker as the new Chief of Police for the City of Fritch.
Coker will be coming from the Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Office and resign from his position as Deputy.
Coker will start on Monday August 22, 2011.
Coker will be replacing Terry Cox, who resigned as Chief of Police on July 29, 2011.
Cox worked for the Fritch Police Department for a total of fourteen years.

Lady Bulldogs brand the Herd and Cats with losses

In past several years the Borger Lady Bulldogs have taken part in a triangular with the Hereford Lady Whitefaces and the Amarillo River Road Wildcats in Amarillo. In the triangular, the Lady Bulldogs historically left Amarillo getting a win over River Road, while having a sense of a moral victory if they were able to play Hereford tough, despite getting the loss in the match.
Last night history changed as the Lady Bulldogs left River Road High School as the “Queens of the Triangular” beating both Hereford and River Road in straight sets due to a great team effort throughout the evening.

Lady Eagles win thriller over Friona

The Sanford Fritch Lady Eagles, sporting new black uniforms, came out Tuesday against the Friona Squaws giving everything they could to win. Leading to a hard fought win for the Lady Eagles in five games.
Game one went to Friona due to slow start and serving errors for Sanford-Fritch 17-25.
In game two and three, the Lady Eagles took charge and had great serving from senior Jacy Judd to win both by 25-18 scores.
Game four was a close, back and forth battle, but the Lady Eagles fell to Friona 19-25.

Tax-free weekend just around the corner

Local department stores and shops are preparing for a crazy weekend on August 19, 20 and 21 - the state’s annual tax holiday.
Wal-Mart Manager Gary Flecher believes his store is ready for the chaotic weekend.
Fletcher stated, “The Wal-Mart home office ships supplies along with items the local store has ordered including back-to-school items and tons of other items that shoppers can save on.”
Fletcher also stated, “We are doing something a bit different this year. We will hold the store open all night Thursday, and at 12:01 a.m. shoppers can get a jump start on shopping tax free.”

Animals at Borger shelter in need of good homes

Now is the time to adopt a new furry family member.
The Borger Animal Control constantly receives animals needing good homes. Animal Control Director Betsy Parks stated they are constantly receiving animals at the shelter. Last year, the shelter received 691 dogs and 409 cats. 44 percent of those animals are either sent back to their owners or adopted out, while the other percentage of animals are euthanized.
Adoptability is all determined on whether the shelter has space, the age of the animal, health, and whether the animal is aggressive.

Frank Phillips College name Lay as new baseball coach

On Monday, Frank Phillips College President Dr. Jud Hicks told the FPC Board of Regents that Kurtis Lay has been hired as the new Plainsmen Baseball Coach.
The head coaching position for the Plainsmen came open in late July after Jared Gaston resigned in order to be closer to his family in Tennessee.
Gaston served as head coach for the Plainsmen just one season, posting a 19-29 overall record and finishing in seventh place in the WJCAC.

Saturday’s scrimmage didn’t reveal too many surprises to Purser

On Monday, Borger Head Football Coach Rusty Purser said he didn’t see anything that was a big surprise in his team’s performance against the Canadian Wildcats on Saturday.
Purser said, “Overall, I think we performed well in the areas that we have experience and we struggled, at times, in the areas that we are trying to develop. In all honesty, I don’t think anything was a major surprise or disappointment”

Borger woman arrested for use of counterfeit money

A Borger woman is in the custody of Amarillo police after allegedly passing fake money at different locations throughout the Texas Panhandle.
On Friday, Aug. 12, at 8:20 p.m., Amarillo police officers were dispatched to the 3300 block of South Bell on a person attempting to pass a possible counterfeit bill. Shannon Washer, 36, of Borger had tried to buy merchandise with what the clerk believed were counterfeit bills.
When the manager did not take the money, Washer took the money and left the property, according to reports from the Amarillo police.

CareNet Pregnancy Center holding annual “Walk For Life” Sept. 24

CareNet Pregnancy Center will hold its annual Walk for Life on September 24, 2011 at 9 a.m. The Walk for Life will start at the new Care Net site on the corner of 300 W. Grand Street.
CareNet Director Susan Trahern said, ”This fund raiser is to raise money for the center and to make the community aware of what they are there for, to show people there is a alternative.”
She also stated that participants will receive a free t-shirt.
There are no fees and no limits to how many sponsors may be gathered.
The walk is a full two miles starting from the CareNet Center.
