Cornyn: County will receive JAG grant

Hutchinson County was awarded a grant worth $16,098 from the Department of Justice.
According to U.S Senator John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, this grant will help prevent crime based on local needs and conditions.
At a Hutchinson County Commissioner’s Court meeting in July, Chief Deputy James Qualls spoke on behalf of the Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Office and requested permission to apply for the Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) totaling around $16,000.

Sign ups for this year’s bowling leagues are underway

Bowling league sign ups are now underway at Wildcatter’s for bowlers of all ages and skill levels.
For kids and teens, the bowling alley’s youth mixed league will once again run on Saturday mornings.
Adult leagues available are as follows.
Monday night: Church League-Mixed league play
Tuesday morning: Chatterettes-Women only league
Tuesday night: Metropolitan-Men only league
Wednesday night: Automotive-Men only league; Progressive-Women only league
Thursday night: Sundowners-Mixed league play
Friday night: Easymarks-Mixed league play

FPC Lady Plainsmen win matches on Saturday at NMMI Tournament

After the first weekend of the season, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen have a 3-1 overall record by winning both of their matches on Saturday at the NMMI Tournament in Roswell, N.M.
The Lady Plainsmen opened Saturday getting the win over Ranger Junior College in straight sets 25-22, 25-15, 25-19.
In their final match of the tournament, the Lady Plainsmen had their hands full with South Mountain Community College. However the team pulled out the win in five games 24-26, 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 15-11.

Chamber kickoff breakfast set for Sept. 8

The time is quickly approaching for the annual Borger Chamber of Commerce kickoff breakfast.
The breakfast will be held at Dake’s from 7-8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8. The serving line for the full traditional breakfast will begin at 6:45 a.m.
RSVP is required for everyone who plans on attending, and all RSVPs are due to the chamber by Friday, Sept. 2. The cost of the breakfast is $10, and is payable at the door.
Attendance at the breakfast will qualify citizens for a $50 drawing, and the latest Borger Bulldog gear will also be given away as door prizes.

Jo Lynn Groves, age 57, of Hockley, Texas died on Thursday, August 18, 2011 in Cypress, Texas after a lengthy illness.

Citizen fighting closure of Sanford Post Office

Stinnett resident Kelly Tull, an eight-year employee of the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority, is using her business resources to save the Sanford Post Office from closure.
Tull said, “I use this post office here because I’m here during my post office’s work hours, so in my opinion this is my post office. From a business standpoint, it’s going to cripple the way we do our day-to-day operation, as far as mailing and receiving mail if this post office were to close.

Leadership Borger to begin Sept. 21

The Borger Chamber of Commerce is about to kick off its 24th year of the Leadership Borger program. The program will begin Sept. 21, 2011.
The program is a one-day per month intensive look at the Borger community and Hutchinson County and an opportunity to gain knowledge to enhance participants’ existing leadership skills.
The program will conclude in April of 2012 with graduation planned at the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet, which will take place in March or April.

Royce E. Beasley

Royce E. Beasley, 78, passed away at 5:04 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at Freeman West in Joplin, MO.
Royce was born on April 14, 1933, in Strawn, TX. He was the son of Roy Calhoun and Grace Lougenia “Cox” Beasley . Royce was employed by the Big 3 Industries where he started as a salesman and retired as a manager after 32 years. He served in the Army. Royce was a member of the Carthage Church of Christ.
Royce was united in marriage to Patricia Fullerton on June 4, 1955 in Carthage, MO. She survives.

Lucindy Kay “Lindy” Lee

Lucindy Kay “Lindy” Lee, 60, of Sanford, died Wednesday, August 24, 2011.
Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 27, 2011 at First Baptist Church at Sanford.
Lindy was born on January 27, 1951 in Shamrock, TX to Curtis and Josie Lemons. She loved Gospel music and her kids.

Handicap is no barrier to mobility

Teddy Buckland owns several handicap motor vehicles. One in particular is his 1977 Honda automatic motorcycle.
Teddy has owned this custom made bike for two and a half years. His friend Leslie George originally made the sidecar.
Teddy rebuilt the entire bike by placing the pre-made sidecar on a motorcycle he purchased off of Ebay for $1,500.
It took about one year to get the bike running properly and looking good.
His helping paramedic of 20 years, Alice Gerard, said, “A whole lot of people in this town have had their hands in this project.”
