Amie Leigh Kuykendall

Amie Leigh Kuykendall, 32, died, Saturday January 14, 2012 at her home in Dumas.
Services are pending with Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Amie was born on April 11, 1979 in Borger, to Tom and Pat Ferguson. She had lived in Dumas for the past six years. She was a homemaker and member of Grace Through Faith Church in Dumas. She loved children and shopping, and was very giving. She loved to celebrate Christmas.

Darrell “Sonny” Brewer

Fritch - Darrell “Sonny” Brewer, 70, of Fritch, died Jan. 15, 2012, in Borger.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 19, 2012 at the Minton Memorial Chapel in Borger. Services are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch. Viewing for Sonny will be wed. from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at our Fritch location, and Thursday morning prior to the service at our Borger location.

Crews fight fires in Bunavista, Skellytown areas

January 18, 2012

Wildfires broke out in Bunavista and near Skellytown on Monday.
The first fire happened at 11:58 a.m. on Highway 136 between Wal-Mart and Bunavista.
A total of 10 firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the fire within 45 minutes.
Borger Fire Marshal Jerry Langwell stated the fire caused damage to eight acres of land.
The cause of the fire is still undetermined at this time.
Later that afternoon, another fire happened near Skellytown, causing damage to about 68 acres.
Langwell said Borger Fire Department responded at 1:36 p.m. for mutual aid.

County native dies in fatal shooting

January 18, 2012

On Saturday, January 14, 2012, Hutchinson County native Amie Kuykendall, 32, was fatally shot by husband Alan Kuykendall, 47, in their home.
The two lived in Moore County at the time of the shooting. Kuykendall was placed in Moore County Jail after the incident Saturday night.
At the time of the shooting Mrs. Kuykendall was arguing with her husband around 10:35 p.m., investigators said.

Local businesses to present expansion plans to BEDC Board

January 18, 2012

On Thursday afternoon, the Borger Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors will hear presentations by two local businesses involving expansion projects.
Mike Brandvik of Brandvik Pipe and Equipment and representatives from Global Frontline Solutions will come before the EDC Board with expansion projects.
The EDC Board is expected to discuss and take action on both projects, according to the EDC’s January meeting agenda.

Borger man sentenced for drug possession

January 17, 2012

A Borger man has been sentenced to 18 years for drug possession.
On Tuesday, Jan. 10, Patrick Fitzhugh Zachary, 40, of Borger, pled guilty and was convicted of Possession of a Controlled Substance, 2nd Degree Felony and was sentenced to 18 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Zachary’s punishment range was enhanced to a 1st degree felony punishment due to a 1997 previous drug conviction.

Fritch PD makes arrest

January 17, 2012

An arrest was made Friday for possession of drug paraphernalia in Fritch. On Friday, January 13, 2012, the Fritch Police Department arrested Michael Beams, 52, at 300 S. Hoyne in Fritch. After his arrest Beams was charged with a Class C misdemeanor and later released on bond.
Chief of Police Kirk Coker said on Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, other criminal activity was spotted near the house on Hoyne and a warrant was issued for Beams’ arrest. Chief Coker commended his officers for doing outstanding work.

Bulldogs open District 1-3A play against Perryton

Tonight, the Borger Bulldogs (9-11) open District 1-3A boys basketball play hosting the Perryton Rangers (17-4) starting at 7:30 p.m. at Tex Hanna Gym.
Despite a record that is two games under .500, the Bulldogs have shown a lot of improvement on the court since November and could make some noise in the district standings.
Junior guard Jamon Hearon continues to lead the Bulldogs in scoring, but the team has seen the whole roster get involved, led by seniors Grant Boren and Aaron Smith, along with junior guard Kolter Newton.

Oh So Close! #10 Odessa College escapes with a 89-84 win over FPC Plainsmen

On Monday evening, the #10 Odessa College Wranglers escaped the BCAC with an 89-84 win over the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen in the WJCAC opener for both teams.
The Plainsmen held a three point lead, 68-65, with 9:30 left in the second half. Unfortunately, the Wranglers used a 10-2 run to build a five point lead that the Plainsmen were not able to overcome in the final four minutes of the game.
