Friday evening, the Borger Bulldogs running game and smothering defense had its way against the Perryton Rangers, resulting in a 32-14 win at Bulldog Stadium.
Borger senior Ty Brown used 36 carries to rush for 304 yards and four touchdowns, while the Rangers were held to just 160 yards of total offense.
The win allows the Bulldogs to finish District 1-3A play with a 3-0 record and gives the team a 10-1 district mark in three seasons Rusty Purser has been head coach. The Bulldogs have also won their third straight District 1-3A title.
It was simple last night for West Texas High. Win the ball game and earn the third place playoff sport in what is probably the toughest 1A District in the state, or lose and start basketball season. The Stratford Elks have been to the state playoffs since 1998, including some recent runner up finishes and a couple of State Titles. If memory serves me, the last time the Tribe has won against the Elks, was 2001. The Comanches handled their business 16-7. So, “How about them Comanches?”
On Friday night, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen opened the 2011-12 season defeating Lubbock Christian University JV 79-64 at the BCAC.
Leading scorers for the Plainsmen were Greg Nelson 18, Akeem Johnson 15, and James Boonstoppel 11.
The Plainsmen host Wayland Baptist JV on Tuesday beginning at 7:00 p.m.
The Borger Fire Department received a grant from Agrium that went toward the purchase of a Polaris UTV.
The grant, in the amount of $25,000, covers the costs of the UTV, which is a six-wheel vehicle equipped for rescue and wildland fire suppression.
The vehicle has the ability to access many places that the department’s larger apparatus can not, so it can transport patients and equipment through the city’s industrial plants and provide quick access to these areas.
Thursday evening, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen basketball team improved to 2-0 for the season, after defeating Lubbock Christian University JV 77-42 in Lubbock.
The Lady Plainsmen began the game by going on a 25-0 run to help them build a 42-16 lead by halftime.
Lady Plainsmen Head Coach Eric Rodewald was impressed with his team's start, saying, “We were firing on all cylinders out of the gate and cooled off a little bit as the game progressed.”
Rodewald added, “Our post really stepped up and played well.”
After a week and half off the court, the West Texas High Lady Comanches will finally get to start post-season play tomorrow afternoon when they take on Archer City at 2:00 p.m. in Childress in the 1A Area Playoff round.
For the second year in a row, the Lady Comanches went through District 5-1A play undefeated by playing solid defense and having an offense that continues to improve.
Box-top and pull-tab drop boxes are available at designated areas in Borger as part of fundraising efforts taking place by local schools.
The PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) have begun to organize drop boxes for box-tops and aluminum pull tabs at Pizza Duo and United.
For every box-top given the school receives $.10.
Children from Paul Belton, Gateway, and Crockett schools will collect aluminum pull tabs to give to the Ronald McDonald House.
Lydia Edwards, a parent from the PTO stated, “It’s a good way to teach the children to contribute charity and raising money.”
