Booker tops West Texas High in basketball doubleheader

(Boys) Booker 57 West Texas High 44
On Tuesday evening, the start of District 1-1A play didn’t get off to the start the West Texas High Comanches wanted as the Booker Kiowas pulled away in the second half for the 57-44 win in Booker.
The Comanches were only down two points, 25-23, at halftime and were in striking distance to get the comeback win in the fourth period.
However, the Kiowas became a hot team in the final period and were able to pull away for the 13 point win.
Kiowa freshman Hunter Lile had the hot hand leading all scorers with 20 points.

Susan Grodzin Heywood

Susan Grodzin Heywood passed away January 4, 2012, in Scottsdale, Arizona. A Valley marketing/advertising executive for many years, she was known in recent years for her charitable work for indigent women and for homeless animals. The Scratch ‘n’ Sniff Foundation, which she created and chaired, produced star-studded awards programs that raised more than a million dollars for Valley animal shelters.

Sherry Hanrahan, 60, of Borger died Friday January 6, 2012 at Borger.
Memorial Mass will be Saturday, January 14, 2012, at St. John’s Catholic Church with Msgr. Michael Colwell officiating. Rosary will be Friday January 13, 2012. Cremation is under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Sherry was born August 30, 1951, at Borger to Matt and Juanita Armstrong. She was a clerk for Fina Gas Station. She married Brian Hanrahan August 4, 1998, at Borger. She loved to play bingo and read books.

Taylor Food Marts acquired by Fikes Wholesale, Inc.

Taylor Food Marts in areas such as West Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico have been acquired by a company based in the Temple area.
On January 9, 2012, Fikes Wholesale Inc., parent company of the 194 CEFCO Convenience Stores, announced it has successfully gained the retail interests of 63 Taylor Food Mart Stores from Taylor Petroleum.
James Fikes, President and CEO of Fikes Wholesale Inc. stated, “This agreement truly represents a win-win for all parties involved and we look forward to serving our customers in these new market areas with immediate plans to resupply depleted inventories.”

Old hospital abatement progressing

The abatement of the old Golden Plains Community Hospital building is continuing to progress.
Dennis Jack, CEO of GPCH, shared a report on the progress at the meeting of the Hutchinson County Hospital District Board of Directors Monday evening. He reported the abatement is around 85 percent complete.

Frank Phillips receives donation from LINN Energy

On Wednesday morning, LINN Energy presented Frank Phillips College with a $35,000 donation to be used to purchase equipment for the P&E and I&E technology program during the grand opening of LINN Energy’s new regional office in Borger.
FPC President Dr. Jud Hicks, FPC Dean of Career and Technology Jack Stanley, LINN Energy Senior VP/Chief Operating Officer Arden Walker, and other representatives from LINN Energy were hand to take part in the presentation of the donation check from LINN Energy to the Frank Phillips College.

Xcel Energy withdraws plans to increase fuel costs

A federal court decision has spurred Xcel Energy to rethink its initial decision to raise gas rates for its residential customer base.
The decision, which pertains to the delay of a costly new environmental regulation, spurred the decision by Xcel.
The update, if it had gone into effect, would have added $6.30 or seven percent, to a typical winter residential bill of 1,000 kilowatt-hours in Texas. Customers in New Mexico eventually would have seen higher fuel costs because customers in both states share the same power generation system.

County LEPC to meet tomorrow

The Hutchinson County Local Emergency Planning Committee will meet on January 12, 2012 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Frank Phillips College cafeteria.
There will be a financial report given by Carie Richards and and other reports such as Public Education Committee-Jerry Langwell,. Compliance Committee-Paton Willis, Public Warning Systems Committee-Danny Richards, and raining/Drill Committee-Bob Watson.
The committee will also discuss Unfinished Business and new business items.

BHS counselors, FPC hosting financial aid night

BHS counselors & Frank Phillips College will be hosting Financial Aid Night on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, 6:00-8:00 P.M. IN THE BHS Media Center. Parents of juniors and seniors are encouraged to attend. Information regarding scholarships, financial aid, and college admission processes will be some of the many topics addressed.
