Melanie Gayle Whitten, 46, lost her long, hard fought battle with breast cancer and passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2012 in Amarillo, TX. She went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born February 18, 1965. She is survived by her four children. 2 sons, Jimmy Koch of the U.S Marines, Ryan Koch of Woodward, Ok and 2 daughters, Tiffany M. McDonald of Borger, TX and Jessica K. Thompson of El Reno, Ok.
Funeral services for Andrew Devon Howell, 26, of Fritch will be 2:00 p.m. Monday at Grace Church with Associate Pastor Tim Hall officiating. Interment will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. Andrew died Wednesday January 4, 2012 in Fritch.
The Hutchinson County United Way is offering community focus grants to non-profit organizations.
HCUW is now accepting applications for this program. Any 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that is not currently a United Way Program Provider may apply for funding.
In July of 2010, HCUW gave community focus grants to the Borger Satellite Workshop, The Bridge, Buttercup House, Eastern TX Panhandle Red Cross, Golden Spread Council (Boy Scouts), High Plains Helping Hand, HC Child Welfare Board, and Stinnett Little League.

Phyllis Goins, 88, of Ozark, Arkansas, died Saturday, December 31, 2011 in Ozark.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ozark, Ark., a member of Jane Phillips Sorority, and a board member of Sr. Citizens. She was born August 4, 1923 to Ross and Nora Craig Mullins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband James H. Goins and a sister Glenda Sue Cole.
Memorial services were held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 3, 2011 at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark, Ark.

Don Rice will be celebrating 50 years as the photographer for the BNH this March. He came to work for the paper in 1962.

Borger PD is seeking answers in connection with a robbery that occurred on New Yearâ€™s Eve.
The robbery occurred the morning of Saturday, December 31, 2011 around 7 a.m. at Allsupâ€™s 416 W. Wilson. Lieutenant Anthony Griffin stated three employees were inside during the incident at the rear of the store, and one employee was taking out the trash through the back door.
SPEARMAN-Tuesday evening can be considered one of the more dominating performances the Borger Bulldog basketball team has seen on the court in a couple of years.
Despite the Spearman Lynx attempts to slow down the game and limit scoring opportunities for Borger, the Bulldogs controlled the action from the opening tip off on their way to getting a 50-20 win in Spearman.
SPEARMAN-On Tuesday evening, the Borger Lady Bulldogs were able to get off to a fast start against the Spearman Lynxettes by opening the game taking an 9-0 lead.
Yet despite the fast start, Spearman took advantage of 13 Lady Bulldog turnovers in the first half to battle back and set the tone in the second half, which saw the Lynxettes pull away for the 57-33 win.
The game opened with sophomore Nellie Embers hitting a jumper to get Borger a 2-0 lead just ten seconds into the game.
