Borger Marine promoted to NCO rank

A U.S. Marine and longtime Borger resident was promoted to the rank of corporal in the United States Marine Corps during a ceremony with Marines and Sailors from the Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group aboard the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek – Fort Story on May 1.
Dallas McNutt, who graduated from Borger High School in 2009, currently serves as a comptroller at the Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group.
Since his enlistment in September of 2009, McNutt has provided more than $13 million in fiscal support to the Marines, Sailors, and civilian personnel of the unit.

WT’s Forrest finishes in 11th place at state golf tournament

On Friday, West Texas High junior Nathan Forrest took 11th place in the Class 1A Boys State Golf Tournament held at the Lion’s Golf Course in Austin.
Forrest shot a two day score of 81-84-165, finishing just five strokes from cracking the top ten.
Jackson Latimer of Martin’s Mill won the boys title shooting 72-74-146.

Frank Phillips College Plainsmen wrap up 2012 baseball season

On Saturday, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen baseball team wrapped up the 2012 season with a pair of losses to the #9 Howard College Red Hawks 11-1 and 10-0.
In game one on Saturday, Howard’s Clayton Crum had a good outing on the pitcher’s mound by getting the win and limiting the Plainsmen to two hits. At the plate, Howard scored at least one run in every inning.
Chance Harlen had a double for the Plainsmen, while Andrew Landin drove in the lone Plainsmen run.
Zach Johnson got the loss on the mound for the Plainsmen.

Irene Isabelle Flowers, 84, of Borger died Tuesday, May 1, 2012 in Clinton, Oklahoma.
Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2012 in Erick, Oklahoma, at the Erick Cemetery with Jake Minton of Borger officiating. Services are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

AMARILLO - Earl A. Liles Jr., 70, of Amarillo, formerly of Fritch, died Wednesday, May 3, 2012 in Amarillo.
A private family service was held. Arrangements are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

City hopes “going green” will save a little green

By continuing to go green in its cleanup efforts, the City of Borger is hoping to save its customers a little green in the process.
The city has accepted 72 green lawn waste dumpsters to augment those that are already in service.
Jason Anderson, who is the city’s solid waste collection supervisor, said the dumpsters will be used to help divert lawn waste from the landfill, which will reduce the overall cost of solid waste service.

HCHD board to meet tonight

The Hutchinson County Hospital District Board of Directors board will meet this evening.
The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight in the executive board room of Golden Plains Community Hospital.
Under old business, the board plans to act on subsidies for the Stinnett and Fritch EMS groups and follow-up, an 1115 Waiver, the THA Trustee Conference (update) and the Medical Office Building (update).
The board also will act on a Fritch EMS report for March 2012, raising the indigent care qualifying income level to 200 percent federal poverty level, and recommended future agenda items.

Errors costly for Comanches in Bi-District baseball loss

West Texas High was in a must win situation Friday afternoon in Canyon.
Facing Lockney for game two of a best of three series, the Comanches played a much better game than the first one, but they fell a little short, losing 10-8 and bowing out of the baseball postseason.
Errors still plagued the Tribe as they were charged with seven. The team played on turf, which could have caused some of the problems.
Jess Shields pitched 3 and 1/2 innings and had 3 strike outs, walked 1, and allowed 8 runs, just one was earned.

Late rally gives Lobos 5-3 win over the Bulldogs

LEVELLAND-On Friday evening, the Levelland Lobos scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull ahead for the 5-3 win over the Borger Bulldogs in the 3A Bi-District Playoff Round.
The win on Friday allowed the Lobos to win the Bi-District series two games to none, after defeating the Bulldogs 16-5 on Thursday evening in Borger.
After seeing game one slip away in the sixth inning on Thursday, the Bulldogs came out focused and put together a better performance on Friday.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo

The Spanish III Pre AP class of Elizabeth Forrest at Borger High School was busy Friday making preparations for Cinco de Mayo. Students in the class decorated piñatas, which will be donated to Paul Belton Elementary next week for their Cinco de Mayo fiestas. Students Vivi Hernandez and Kourtney Jones show off their colorful creations.

The Borger cross country teams competed at the Rebel Run in Amarill this past Saturday. See full...
