Cyclists gear up for Bike MS: Wild West Ride 2011

Texas Panhandle residents will pedal toward a world free of multiple sclerosis during Bike MS: The Wild West Ride 2011, presented by BP on Saturday and Sunday, July 16-17.
The race is aiming to raise $100,000 to fund multiple sclerosis research, along with programs and services for more than 56,000 Texans served by the National MS Society.
The annual two-day fundraising ride is fully-supported and features a scenic route from Amarillo to Canadian.

Helton takes third at College National Finals Rodeo

This past weekend, Frank Phillips College sophomore Logan Helton earned a third place finish in bull riding at the 2011 College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo.
Helton, a Pampa native studying agriculture business at FPC, placed third in the nation behind Cody Teel of Sam Houston State University and Doug Vowkaw of Hill College.
Aboard the bull Cassius Clay, Helton split fourth and fifth place with a 77 in round two, then came back and won the short go-round with the highest mark of the week, scoring an 84 aboard Ty Rinaldo’s bull, Freaking Wild.

Sox mascot to be introduced during game on Friday

AMARILLO – The Amarillo Sox announced that they will unveil the new team mascot during the Sox game on Friday, June 24 against the Shreveport-Bossier Captains when they begin a three-game series at 7:05pm.
The as-of-yet unnamed mascot will make its first appearance prior to the game and will entertain fans throughout that night’s game. The mascot’s name will be announced during its introduction on Friday.

WJCAC adopts Men’s and Women’s Rodeo as an official conference sport

At the Spring Meeting, the Western Junior College Athletic Conference adopted Men’s and Women’s Rodeo as a WJCAC Conference Sport.
Within the conference, six of the 10 conference colleges currently participate in rodeo. The six colleges include Clarendon College, Frank Phillips College, Howard College, New Mexico Junior College, Odessa College, and Western Texas College.

Schneider leads USA U16 team to gold medal

Former Phillips Lady Blackhawk and Borger Lady Bulldogs Head Basketball coach Jill Schneider guided the USA U16 girls to the championship of the 2011 FIBA Americas Tournament in Mexico on Saturday by defeating Brazil, 73-40.
For Schneider, it’s her fifth gold medal, as she won four as a player, but lost out on earning one in the 1980 Olympics when the USA boycotted those games.
This is her first gold medal as a coach.

Amarillo Bulls announce 2011-12 schedule; home opener set for October 1st

AMARILLO–The Amarillo Bulls, proud members of the North American Hockey League, announced on Monday their 2011-2012 schedule.
This year’s schedule consists of 60 contests including four at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota as well as 28 home and 28 away games. One of the many highlights of the schedule is the Bulls home opener set for Saturday, October 1st at 7 pm against the New Mexico Mustangs at The Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.

Green reinstated as NJCAA Region V Director and Conference Commissioner

In the past two weeks, former Frank Phillips College and current Clarendon College Athletic Director, John Green has been reinstated as the WJCAC Conference Commissioner and the NJCAA Region V Men’s Director.
“I am thrilled to be back plugged into the offices. I have enjoyed this conference and region and the leadership that I work with.
“There are is much more I wish to accomplish to elevate the collegiate sports of the WJCAC and Region V,” replied Green.

Over the weekend many of best riders in the Texas Panhandle were in town to take part in the 2011 Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo.

Baca spending time in front of the television and movie cameras

If moving his local studio from Cedar Street to its new location in the old Smitty’s Furniture Building on Main Street and opening new studios in Guymon and Spearman were not keeping him busy enough, Master MarkAnthony Baca of American Karate Studios could soon be on a television or movie screen near you.
Baca has been spending some time in front of a television camera down in Austin for a martial arts based reality show, while now preparing for a role in an upcoming independent film scheduled to start shooting in July titled “The Cain Complex.”

Local players named to Globe News Super Team

The great 2011 season for the Borger Bulldogs did not go unnoticed by the Amarillo Globe News as the regional newspaper named three Borger Bulldogs to the 15 members Globe News Baseball Super Team.
Hunter Hertel, Brandon Garcia and Garrett Irwin were named to the team, after posting some impressive stats on a Bulldog team that won the District 1-3A title outright and advanced three rounds deep into the 3A playoffs.
Hertel earned Super Team honors as a pitcher by posting a 10-4 record with a 2.68 ERA and striking out 89 batters.

The Lady Eagle volleyball team will head to River Road for a district matchup with the Lady...
