Local area student continue to enjoy the fruits of their success in the athletic field and classroom by earning various awards for what they have done this school year.
Fresh off winning the 3A State Mixed-Doubles title with his sister Abbie in Austin last week, Borger High School senior Josh Madden was named to the 3A All-State Academic Tennis Team. J.Madden will graduate as salutatorian from Borger High School.
Wednesday morning, Borger High School junior Abbie Madden was announced as Female Athlete of the Year in Tennis by the Amarillo Globe News.
With school wrapping up in the next two weeks, several of the area coaches are busy making plans for their athletic summer camps to help younger student-athletics learn the basics of various sports.
More athletic camps will be announced throughout the summer from the different local high schools and Frank Phillips College.
Baseball
The Borger Baseball Summer Camp is scheduled to take place on Monday, June 6th through Thursday, June 9th at Huber Park Baseball Field.
May 17th
The Borger Bulldogs will take on the Lubbock Cooper Pirates in a best of three series this weekend in the 3A Regional Quarterfinals.
All three games will be played at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview with game one starting at 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening.
Game two will start at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday followed by game three if necessary.
Monday evening Sanford-Fritch coaches, athletes and family gathered at Dake’s Restaurant in Borger to look back on the spring semester in Eagles and Lady Eagles athletics.
The coaches spent time talking about the ups and downs their teams faced over the season but credited the student athletes for their continued hard work and dedication to the various programs.

On Friday, senior J’Cee Pool became the first Borger High School Lady Bulldog to ever win a championship at the state track and field meet, a feat longtime Borger Track Coach Jeep Webb confirmed shortly after Pool won the 3A Girls Discus with a throw of 140-00. On her thoughts of Pool winning the state title, Borger Head Girls Track Coach Leslie Young recalled, ”We knew going to Austin that J’cee could medal, she just had to compete and that’s exactly what she did. She didn’t go out and win it on her first throw, she didn’t take the lead until the first throw of the finals.

Solid pitching, good defense and a three-run third inning proved to be a winning combination Saturday afternoon as the Borger Bulldogs defeated the Pecos Eagles 5-2 in game two of the best of three 3A Area Round series.
Borger took the series two games to none and advances to the 3A Regional Quarterfinals against Lubbock Cooper next weekend.
The Bulldogs received a solid performance on the mound by senior Acton Smith, who went all seven innings, scattering nine hits for two earned runs.

WOODROW-Bad defense can hurt you, but good defense can bail you out.
Friday evening the Borger Bulldogs learned both lessons in game one of their 3A Area Round playoff series with the Pecos Eagles at Lubbock Cooper High School.
Through seven innings the Bulldogs committed five errors on the field yet were able to pull two key double plays, along with senior catcher Brandon Garcia throwing out two base runners, as Borger was able to hang on for a 5-4 win.
Beginners luck?
In her first year throwing the discus at the high school level, Borger senior J’Cee Pool will graduate as the top girl’s discus thrower in Class 3A winning the state title on Friday morning with a throw of 140-00 at the Texas State Track and Field Meet in Austin.
Pool reached the 140-00 mark on her fourth throw of the day, which placed her nearly six feet ahead of the second place finisher Olivia Williams of Nevada Community.
Pool’s gold medal in the discus will be a first in the Borger girls track program.
Friday afternoon West Texas High senior Terrence Bonds came in third place in the Class 1A Long Jump at the Texas State Track and Field Meet in Austin.
Bonds will compete in the 1A 300m hurdles tomorrow.

After a season where he tore up opposing defenses on his way to earning District 1-3A MVP honors, Borger High School senior Shavoyiea Clement signed his letter of intent to play football for Wayland Baptist University on Friday morning.
An 3A All-State honorable mention in 2010, Clement played a big role in helping the Bulldogs claim the District 1-3A title and advancing to the regional playoff round by rushing for just over 1,800 yards.
What attracted Clement to Wayland is the size saying, “I didn’t want to go to a big school and when I went to visit Wayland I loved it.”
