This past Saturday, former longtime Borger High School Boys Basketball Head Coach Duane Hunt was honored as part of the 2012 class entering the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame banquet ceremony took place in San Antonio, during the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) clinic.
Hunt spent 23 seasons coaching the Bulldogs where he had a 507-206 record, which included two state runner-up finishes in the late 1970â€™s. During his 26-year coaching career he took three teams to the state tournament and had a 548-236 overall record.
Borger High School junior Aaron McKee will compete in the Texas High School State Finals Rodeo in June after becoming the Tri-State and Region One Bull Riding Champion.
Earlier this month, McKee won the region bull riding title at the Tri-State High School Rodeo in Vernon, with the competition drawing over 200 competitors from around West Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.
The State Finals Rodeo will take place in Abilene the week of June 10-17th, drawing over 500 competitors from throughout Texas.
Seven Borger Lady Bulldogs softball players received District 1-3A All-District honors for their play on the field during the 2012 season.
Senior shortstop Alex Lopez received District 1-3A MVP honors with Pampa junior Bailey Beck.
Three Borger sophomores were named Second Team All-District, which includes pitcher Taylor Hickman, first baseman Katie Ammerman, and outfielder Kyla Baker.
Receiving honorable mention honors were junior catcher Payden Dompe, junior third baseman Taryn â€śTootieâ€ť Karins, and senior second baseman Dakota Karins.
2012 District 1-3A All-District Team
Frank Phillips College Menâ€™s Head Basketball Coach Chris Hackett will be hosting a boyâ€™s basketball camp on Tuesday, May 29th through Friday, June 1st at the BCAC.
The camp is open to boys ages 7-17 and is scheduled to run from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. each day.
In the camp, Hackett and the FPC Coaching Staff will focus on fundamentals including shooting, passing, dribbling, rebounding, defense, and individual offense.
The camp will also feature 1-on-1, 3-on-3, and 5-on-5 leagues, daily competitions, and camp prizes and certificates.
This past week, the Borger High School Head Volleyball and Girls Basketball positions became open.
On Wednesday Jason Carter informed the volleyball players that he is leaving Borger to take a principal position within the Roby Consolidated School District, which is near Sweetwater.
In December, Carter was promoted to the head volleyball coaching position after spending several years coaching and teaching in the Borger school district, including serving as an assistant volleyball coach under Cara Adams and Michael Littlejohn.
From hitting clutch jump shots to scoring touchdowns, West Texas High School senior Alex Ramirez did a little bit of everything during the 2011-12 school year.
The people in Stinnett and 1A schools in the Texas Panhandle have known how good of an athlete Ramirez has been for the past three years, especially on the basketball court.
Ramirez has been named the District 1-1A Offensive MVP three years in a row, which includes the senior averaging 18.4 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 4.4 APG, and 2.1 SPG this past season.
West Texas High senior Abby Summers was selected as the 2011-12 Borger News Heraldâ€™s Female Athlete of the Year due to academic and athletic success in volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis and cheerleading during her senior year.
Competing in sports has always been a big part of Summerâ€™s life, with the senior commenting, â€śDue to having a dad who is a coach, I have always been busy playing sports or having him working with me to get better.â€ť
Sanford-Fritch High School Girlâ€™s Basketball Coach Jason Hale was named the 2011-12 Borger News Herald Coach of the Year for leading the Lady Eagles to a 20-win season and a second place finish in District 1-2A.
Hale is finishing his seventh year as a coach, which includes stops at Spade and Springlake-Earth before coming to Sanford-Fritch three years ago. Hale spent one year leading the Sanford-Fritch varsity boys before taking over the Lady Eagles head coaching position prior to the 2010-11 season.
The First Nazarene Church of Borger is planning to offer a free mega sports camp this summer, titled â€śBeyond the Gold,â€ť to help kids 5-12 years old to learn more about sports.
First Nazarene Church Pastor Terry Porter said, â€śWe want to give kids a chance to learn more about sports, discover character building concepts and have a whole lot of fun, all for free.â€ť
Former Borger Bulldog player and Claude Head Baseball Coach Matt Green will be the campâ€™s Baseball Head Coach and Borger Bulldog Cheerleader Southern Shira will be the campâ€™s Cheerleading Coach.
