Over the past couple of years, one of the best rivalries within the WJCAC has been found on the volleyball court between the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen and the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) Lady Broncos.
After Wednesday evening, the rivalry appears to still be going strong as the two teams squared off in a great five game match in Roswell, N.M., where the Lady Plainsmen came away with the win 25-18, 19-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13.
As the game with the Dumas Demons moved along last Friday, it was hard not to notice a little bit of frustration creeping into the Borger Bulldogs sideline in their 20-12 loss to send them to 1-3 for the season.
Through three quarters, the Bulldog offense struggled to get much going which led to the defense spending a lot of time out on the field.
After going through a tough non-district schedule, the Sanford-Fritch Eagles are getting to push the reset button on the season by starting District 1-2A play on Friday on the road against the Tulia Hornets.
The Eagles enter district play as the defending champions where they won the crown by going undefeated in their six district games last season.
But in order to defend their title, the Eagles will need to tighten up their defense that has given up an average of 38 points per game in the team’s four non-district losses.
After suffering their first loss of the season, the West Texas High Comanches look to rebound with a win to end non-district play on a high note over the next two weeks, beginning on Friday night when they take on the Electra Tigers in Wellington.
In last Friday’s loss to Spearman, the Comanches were able to move the ball throughout the game, racking up 355 yards in total offense. However, five Comanche turnovers led to two Spearman touchdowns in the 31-14 loss for the Comanches.
There are times in sports when the underdog rises up and other times when a ranked team lives up to their hype. On Tuesday night, the 5A #10 Amarillo High Lady Sandies showed why they are one of the best teams in Texas by muscling their way to a three game sweep over the Borger Lady Bulldogs 25-14, 25-9, 25-13 at Tex Hanna Gym.
Game one started well for the Lady Bulldogs, as a kill by Haley Armstrong and a block by Raygen Eakins helped the team build a 6-2 lead.
This past weekend, the Borger Boys and Girls Golf teams opened the 2011 fall season competing in Hereford.
The Borger Boys finished the tournament in third place with a team score of 315-318 putting them behind Plainview and Amarillo High.
Tyler Sosebee finished fifth in the tournament shooting a 77-74-155 while Billy Haynes came in sixth with a 75-80-155.
Other Borger Boys scores were Dylan Coffer 78-80-158, Will Conner 85-84-169 Kaylor Chatwell 85-86-171.
On Monday night, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen volleyball team defeated Redlands Community College and Otero Junior College in straight sets to finish their three game home stand undefeated.
In both matches, Lady Plainsmen benefited from a great team effort to establish themselves as the dominate team in the BCAC defeating Redlands 25-10, 25-22, 25-15 and getting past Otero 25-22, 25-20, 25-21.
Add in the four game win over Vernon Junior College on Saturday, the Lady Plainsmen were able to make the most of their home court advantage over the past three days.
