PLAINVIEW- Any hope for the Borger Lady Bulldog Softball Team extending its 2011 season was quickly done away with on Saturday afternoon.
The Andrews Lady Mustangs scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning, setting the tone for the Lady Mustang 17-1 win in game two of the best-of-three series.
After winning game one on Friday evening, Andrews took the 3A Area Round playoff series two games to none to advance to the 3A Regional Quarterfinals this coming weekend against Lubbock Cooper.
This week, Borger High School senior golfer Will Paulsell will begin his final tournament as a high school golfer by taking part in the 3A State Tournament at Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin.
The trip marks the second time the Borger golfer will have competed at the state tournament. Yet it will be the first time since 2008 the heralded golfer has had the opportunity to compete for the state title.
Back in 2008, Paulsell made his presence known on the area high school golf scene as a freshman, winning the district title and earning that first trip to the state tournament.
PLAINVIEW-Solid pitching and an aggressive hit-and-run style at the plate proved to be a great formula for the Andrews Lady Mustangs in game one of the best-of-three 3A Area Round series with the Borger Lady Bulldogs on Friday evening in Plainview.
Lady Mustang pitcher Shannon Hobbs used a good combination of pitches to limit the Lady Bulldogs to two hits, while Andrews combined for 13 runs on 18 hits in the first two innings to set the tone for the 19-3 win for Andrews.
Andrews opened the bottom of the first inning with three singles and a bunt to quickly take a 0-2 lead.
Starting on Monday, West Texas High sophomore Nathan Forrest will compete in the 1A State Golf Tournament at Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin.
Forrest earned a spot at the state tournament by coming in fourth place overall at the 1A Region I Tournament two weeks ago.
In talks with West Texas High Coach Aron Graves, Forrest is believed to be the first golfer from West Texas High to qualify for the state golf tournament.
After falling to Howard College in the first round of the NJCAA Region V West Tournament on Thursday, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen tried to keep their season alive when they took on El Paso CC on Friday morning.
The Lady Plainsmen got off to a good start by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. However El Paso would score five runs in the fith and sixth innings to come away with the 6-3 win, ending the Lady Plainsmen’s 2011 season.
