After an up-and-down trip south during Spring Break, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen returned home this weekend to take on the NMMI Broncos in a four-game WJCAC series.
In the first two games on Friday, the Plainsmen took care of business on their home field by coming away with two wins, 7-4 and 8-5.
Game one: Frank Phillips 7, NMMI 4
The Broncos opened the first game strong at the plate by scoring three runs in the first inning.
However, the Plainsmen used good second and third innings to score seven runs to take a 7-3 lead where they were able to hang on for the 7-4 win.
When Head Coach Steve Watkins took over the Borger Lady Bulldog softball program before the 2009 season, the varsity squad was one that had seen a couple of years of struggles on the field and was a program thin in upperclassmen leadership.
As a result, Watkins was forced with the task of putting together a varsity team full of sophomores and freshmen that was a little green in some of the fundamentals of the game, which in turn led to the team taking a couple of lumps the past two years on the field.
