13th Annual Curves Food Drive kicks off in April

Local residents are encouraged to make a difference through the 13th annual Curves Food Drive which is set to kick off this April.
Throughout the month, Curves of Borger will participate in this drive to collect non-perishable food and cash donations to benefit their local food bank. From April 4-17, Curves will waive the membership fee for new members who donate a bag of non-perishable food or make a minimum donation of $30.

Trash Bash is underway!

In case local citizens didn’t know, the City of Borger is currently in the middle of its Spring Trash Bash.
The event is taking place through Saturday.
The city is sponsoring the free week for county residents to bring their trash to the transfer station, located at 920 North Florida.
Tire disposal will not have a limit throughout this time period.
Free disposal of tires will take place for residential customers only, and an ID will be required of all persons who are disposing of tires.
The event is being sponsored by the Borger Chamber of Commerce and the City of Borger.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

The month of April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.
In honor of Child Abuse Awareness Month, the Hutchinson County Child Welfare Board will be hosting a 5K run on Saturday, April 23, 2011. The race will start at 8am from the park beside the Museum on Main St.
The cost of registration is $25, and this includes a go blue t-shirt. Children under 10 are free if accompanied by a registered parent (no t-shirt will be provided for these children). The public is also encouraged to wear blue on this day for the “Go Blue” statewide campaign to raise awareness to child abuse awareness.

The Marina is almost empty

The Marina at Lake Meredith is close to being emptied. The decision was made to close the Marina late last year due to the low lake levels at Lake Meredith. The Marina officially closed at the beginning of 2011.

Commissioner’s court takes care of business

The Hutchinson County Commissioners Court took care of business at its regular meeting Monday at the Hutchinson County Courthouse.
At this meeting the commissioners discussed considering or approving the action regarding redistricting and a letter from Allison Bass & Associates L.L.P. concerning assessment of the existing political boundaries.
The motion was made to leave existing boundaries as they are and to not move forward with redistricting and the motion followed through.
Also approved was the West Texas Gas line crossing for County Road 13, Precinct 3.

Planning and Zoning Commission holds Monday session

The Planning and Zoning Commission of the City of Borger took time to discuss various items during a session held Monday evening.
First on the agenda was to receive and consider a request from Jeff Whittington to re-zone 1.5 acres of land located in the SE/4 of Sect. 18, Block “Y”, M&C Survey, from single family (IF-2) zoning district to commercial zoning district to be known as 100 Denton. This piece of land is located off Houston and Gardner.

New Hampton Inn set to open Thursday

The new Hampton Inn of Borger will open on March 31. This hotel will have such features as 32-inch LCD televisions as well as free high-speed internet access.
A “Suite Shop” will be available for late night snacks or goodies for the road, along with a fitness center for people wanting to get in a good workout.
There is a Business Center that will be available 24 hours a day for hotel guests to print documents and boarding passes, check email messages or surf the web, etc., and a free continental breakfast is available.

Crime Stoppers seeking help with unsolved burglary

The Crime Stoppers is seeking the help of the public in the resolution of an unsolved burglary that occurred earlier this month.
On March 17, 2011, during the evening hours, a residence in the 1100 block of Carpenter Street was burglarized.
During the burglary, several firearms were stolen from the residence. Also taken from the residence were gun sights, scopes, and rifle cases.
According to Lt. Anthony Griffin of the Borger Police Department, the estimated loss value of the firearms and accessories totaled near $2,000.

New business requesting re-plat

A new business will be requesting a re-plat at the upcoming meeting of the Planning and Zoning Commission.
The meeting is set to be held at 7 p.m. this evening in the city council chambers of Borger City Hall, 600 North Main.
The commission will receive and consider a request from CVS Pharmacy for a re-plat of Lots 4-11, Block 24, Unit 4, Thompson Addition, containing 1.303 acres, to be known as Lot 4, Block 24, Unit 4, Thompson Addition, 230 N. Cedar Street.

Library book sale kicks off Thursday

MIt’s almost here!
The Hutchinson County Friends of the Library Spring Book sale is set to begin this Thursday, March 31, and it will run through Saturday, April 2, set to be held at the Borger branch of the Hutchinson County Library.
The sale will be open to members only on Thursday, with hours of 4-7 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, the sale will be open to the general public, with hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 1, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 2.

FPC Girls Basketball team named All-Academic Team....see sports for more.
  The Future Lady Bulldog Basketball Camp will be held on July 14th through the 17th.
