Recent CRMWA agreement will benefit Borger area

The recent signage of an agreement between the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority and Mesa Water will have a positive effect on the Borger area.
The signing of the water rights between the two entities took place on June 23 at the Plainview Country Club/Civic Center in Plainview.
Pickens and Mesa Water, Inc. sold the water rights beneath 211,000 acres for $103 million to CRMWA. The purchase gives CRMWA water rights for over 400,000 acres in the Texas Panhandle, almost all of which is located in Roberts County.

Farmer’s Market set to begin tomorrow

The Hutchinson County Farmer’s Market is set to begin tomorrow morning!
The market will be set up every Friday through the remainder of the summer from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. or sooner if farmers sell out.
The market will be located in the 500 block of Weatherly (one block east of Main Street).
The market is open to all community buyers and sellers. Stands will consist of a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, homemade jams, breads, and assorted fruit juices.

Elvira Carrales: A true champion

As soon as Elvira Carrales came onto the gymnasium floor at Amarillo High School on Wednesday evening, it was evident that the 10-year-old was ready to live in the moment and get the crowd of around 1,000 people up on their feet.

Lightning keeps officials busy fighting fires

Local fire departments responded to two fires caused by lightning early Tuesday morning.
Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards said that two related fires caused by the lightning storm broke out at 12:45 a.m. The storm traveled in from south of Hutchinson County late Monday night through early Tuesday morning.
The first fire was located on Milner Road and the Fritch Fire Department responded. Five acres were damaged in the fire and it was reported contained at 2 a.m.
The second fire caused by the same storm occurred on Sanford Yake Road.

BFD responds to house fire on Boyd Street Tuesday afternoon

The Borger Fire Department responded to a house fire on Boyd Tuesday afternoon.
The fire took place at 1218 Boyd, property that is owned by Mr. Howard Wright of Pampa. The call came in around 11:30 a.m.
Upon arriving on scene, firefighters found the fire had started in the garage area of the home. Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards said that due to the garage being full of live ammunition, firefighters evacuated surrounding residents for safety precautions. There were no injuries and the fire was contained at 1:15 p.m. The cause of fire is still under investigation.

Evonik Plant achieves major milestone

Employees at the Evonik Carbon Black Plant in Borger have achieved a significant milestone.
The employees at the plant have worked 1.8 million hours, or 4,015 days, without a lost time accident.
A lost time accident is defined as a work-related injury resulting in at least one day off the job.
According to Jack L. Clem, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Inorganic Materials (Business Line Carbon Black), a dedicated workforce, management commitment, and strong training are the reasons for an accident-free production site over the last three years.

Changes made to county emergency management plan

Changes have been made to the Hutchinson County emergency management plan.
Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards spoke with the Hutchinson County Commissioners during their regular meeting Monday morning in regards to changes to the plan.
The first modification included violations of the fireworks ban.
Selling and setting off fireworks are considered a Class C misdemeanors and can result in fines.

HCHM holding quilt show this July

The Hutchinson County Museum’s 30th annual quilt show will be held on July 1-30, 2011.
All programs in conjunction with the show will be at 2 p.m. on their respective dates at the museum on 618 N. Main. There is no admission for the show but donations are appreciated.
The first program by Carol Aspaugh from Guymon, Okla., will be July 10, 2011. The next program will be by Judy Flanders, Julia Kasch, and others sharing antique quilts. Awards will also be presented. The last show by Gayle Wilson from Pampa will be a trunk show held on July 24, 2011.

Quanah Parker Trail Committee members meet in Borger

Members of the Quanah Parker Trail Committee of the Texas Plains Trail Region (TPTR) and friends gathered Friday for a photograph on the grounds of the Hutchinson County Museum in Borger. Wearing the sheriff’s badge is Deborah Sue McDonald, TPTR executive director. After the quarterly meeting, some committee members participated in Borger’s annual Adobe Walls Trek Saturday to battle sites dating from 1864 and 1874.

Local officials investigating several weekend fires

Officials are currently investigating several fires that burned in Hutchinson County throughout this weekend.
During the weekend, there was a total of 18 reported fires.
On Saturday June 25, 2011, a total of 10 fires broke out two miles south of Stinnett on Highway 152 around noon. Then, four more fires were reported at 12:05 p.m. on Highway 687 the same day.
Firefighters from Stinnett, Fritch, Borger, and Hutchinson County also responded to a fire that started from a downed electrical line.
