Borger family, others arrested for federal offenses

Throughout the past few weeks, special agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have arrested nine individuals in the Amarillo area on various felony drug charges in recently unsealed federal criminal complaints, according to U.S. Attorney Sarah R. Saldaña of the Northern District of Texas.
On Thursday afternoon, defendants Jose “Junior” Fernandez, 36; Aaron Fernandez, 26; and Thomas Joseph Salazar, 23, appeared before Magistrate Judge Clinton E. Averitte and were ordered to be detained pending further court proceedings.

Local business raising funds for United Way

Happy State Bank is currently raising funds for United Way. Each employee has decorated a pumpkin. Customers coming in the bank can give a donation as a vote for the best pumpkin. Donations will be given to Hutchinson County United Way. Showing off the pumpkins that customers can vote on are Jamie Deaton, Hanna Davis, Jennifer McKinney, and Terri Reneau.

Work on new Subway progressing

Work on Borger’s new Subway restaurant is continuing to progress.
Frank Wingate, one of the operating partners of Subway, said work on the new location is going well, although things have gone a little slower than anticipated.
“We had a delay of some of the materials that has slowed us up some,” he said. “We definitely won’t be serving turkey for Thanksgiving at the store.”
However, Wingate did say the store equipment is due to arrive now at the end of November and they will get everything up and running and training folks in the early days of December.

Seliger stops in Borger

State Senator Kel Seliger spoke to Borger citizens on many questioned topics Tuesday morning.
At Borger City Hall, Seliger focused on some hot topics related to the 82nd legislative session and some topics citizens were concerned and curious about.
Seliger started his discussion by saying, “I always enjoy being here and having a town hall meeting.” When the discussion over the 82nd legislative session started about a year ago the state was looking at a structural deficit of 27 billion dollars.

From ordinary pallets to wonderful creations

Longtime Borger resident Vance Brown has used some of his time over the past ten years to tear down pallets to make wonderful creations.
Within the past two months, one of his newest hobbies he has just picked up involves making wishing wells from pallets.
“It all started with my wife wanting a wishing well. So, I torn down a pallet and made her one and have made them since.” he states.
Brown sells his creations at the customer’s price.
“If people want to buy them I let them make the offer.” he said.

Local citizens take part in Honor Flight

A local citizen and his wife recently got to take part in the Honor Flight earlier this month in Washington, D.C.
Jimmie L. (Shorty), a World War II veteran and wife Leola flew north for the Honor Flight, which toko place on Oct. 5, 2011.
At approximately 7:30 a.m., they took off from Amarillo’s Rick Husband airport for their first step on the way to Washington, D.C.

Amendment election set for Nov. 8

Early voting in the 2011 Texas Constitutional Amendment Election is underway.
Jan Barnes, Hutchinson County Clerk, said that those wishing to vote early can do so starting today through Nov. 8, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Polling places are as follows:
•Hutchinson County Annex, 1400 Veta Street, Room 111, Borger
•Fritch Library Community Room, 205 North Cornell, Fritch
•Hutchinson County Courthouse, 500 Main Street, Basement, Stinnett
Election Day will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 8, 2011. The polling places on that day are as follows:

Kel Seliger to speak tomorrow at City Hall

State Senator Kel Seliger will be speaking at the Borger town hall meeting on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at Borger City Hall on 600 N. Main St.
Seliger has spoke about the activities of the 82nd Legislative Session over the past two months.
“The town hall meetings are a great way to ensure there is continuing dialogue from the people who live in my district,” he said. “I hold them regularly and use the information exchanged.”
