County Commissioner’s Court signs proclamation for National 4-H Week

(Editor’s Note: In honor of Oct. 2-8 being National 4-H Week, the Hutchinson County 4-H will be running a series of articles throughout this week’s editions of the Borger News-Herald.)

On Monday, September 26th, the Hutchinson County Commissioner’s court signed a proclamation officially recognizing October 2-8, 2011 as National 4-H Week in Hutchinson County.

Local citizens give of their time to bash the trash

Local citizens have been getting out and bashing the trash during the City of Borger’s Trash Bash week, taking place through Oct. 1. Among those working to keep the City of Borger clean are Cathy West, Tobie Slaybaugh, Jessica Ford, Carissa Wells, Tammie Bridwell, and Melinda Hudson. The City of Borger is sponsoring the week for county residents to bring their trash for free to the transfer station. Tire disposal will not have a limit during this week. The transfer station will be open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

FlintFest taking place this weekend

The Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument is preparing for its second annual “Alibates Rocks!” FlintFest this weekend.
The event, set to take place Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2, 2011, will kick off a month-long celebration of Texas Archeology Month at Alibates Flint Quarries, the only national monument in the State of Texas.

H&M Pharmacy: Serving Hutchinson County since 1962

H & M Pharmacy has been serving Hutchinson County since 1962.
Co-owner John Moss has been with H&M for 44 out of the 45 years of operation. Moss states that H&M offers things like prescriptions, compounding, vaccines, diabetic supplies, delivery, and emergency calls.
“We cater to prescriptions and offer more professional services,” he said.
Moss continued to say, “Clients can always expect a friendly smile, warm greetings, and immediate services. At H&M, we practice under the assumption that service to humanity is the best work of life.”

FPC hosting Oscar winning guest Thursday

Frank Phillips College will have an Oscar-winning guest on campus tomorrow.
Michael Blake, who is an Oscar-winning screenwriter and author of the bestseller “Dances With Wolves,” will speak to the student body and the public in the FPC Community Activity Center this Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011. The event is free and the community is invited.
Blake’s visit to FPC is part of the college’s Common Experience program. His speech will include events from his life, going from a struggling writer to an Oscar winner.

Borger resident killed in weekend accident

September 26, 2011

A Borger resident was killed and another critically injured in an accident occurring late Saturday evening.
On September 24, 2011, an eastbound Ford Mustang traveling on Highway 152 slid into a ravine, causing the vehicle to overturn.
According to Department of Public Safety reports, the driver, identified as Jimmy Dale Ream, 35, was ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt and suffered severe head injures.
The passenger, Kimberly Ann Warren, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene around 10:25 p.m. by a Justice of the Peace, who ordered an autopsy be performed.

Citizen brings hospital use request to HCHD

A local citizen with interest in the old hospital building brought her request before the Hutchinson County Hospital District Board of Directors last Monday evening.
Mary Kay Phelan, an employee of ConocoPhillips and Director of High Plains Helping Hands, said there has been interest from churches in the community to start a facility that would house a soup kitchen and shelter. She asked the board if there was a possibility of the add-on portion of the hospital being saved for such usage.

City budget, tax rate finalized

The Borger City Council has given approval to the City of Borger’s budget and tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year.
The action was taken during the council’s regular meeting on Tuesday afternoon. The proposed expenditures in the FY 2011-12 operating budget total $22,104,944, which include all funds and capital equipment purchases.

Workshop to be held for nonprofits

A free workshop being held this Friday will give non-profit organizations much needed information on the handling of legal issues.
Legal Check Up for Nonprofits will be presented in this workshop on Friday, Sept. 23, 2011. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the Frank Phillips College campus in the A&I Conference Center.
Beverly Benton, CEO of the Borger Chamber of Commerce, said the workshop is open to nonprofit board members and executive directors, and will cover legal issues relating to corporate governance and compliance.

Borger grad devotes life to creating lasting art

Borger High School graduate Rex Wilt has devoted his life to creating lasting works of art.
Wilt was the featured speaker at the Borger Rotary Club Tuesday afternoon, and shared details with the crowd about his career in the field of commercial art, a career he shares with his wife Michele.
He said he actually started training for his career when he was twelve years of age. His father kept asking him what he wanted to do with his life, and he told him he was interested in being an artist. His father told him he would starve to death.
