The Hutchinson County United Way is making plans for its upcoming Day of Caring, and is currently seeking ways in which it can help out the community.
This yearâs event is set for Sept. 17, 2011. According to Teri Hogue of the HCUW, the event truly has a âneighbor helping neighborâ focus.
âThe Day of Caring is a day when volunteers choose to give their time and services to work on a one-time service project in an effort to impact our communityâs needs with tasks that they are unable to perform themselves,â she said.
On Friday night cancer survivors, family members, local organizations and businesses along with community supporters throughout Hutchinson County came out to Huber Park to take part in the 2011 American Cancer Society âRelay For Lifeâ.

No fireworks can be bought or sold in Hutchinson County this year.
Hutchinson County Judge Faye Blanks issued a Declaration of Disaster that will prohibit the sale or use of fireworks. This disaster declaration was signed and approved by Texas Governor Perry Friday, and will be in effect until 7 a.m. July 5, 2011.
Since the beginning of the year, the Hutchinson County has seen less than Ÿ inch of rainfall, and local fire departments have put out over 130 fires as of this point in 2011.

Quick with a warm smile and a big hug, Linda Garrett of Fritch is always in motion. She is a people person, a self-professed âhuggerâ and is a woman of God to her core, and is very active in her church. She is a person who has the ability to see the positive and finds a blessing in every situation that she encounters.
And she is a cancer survivor. This marks the third battle she has waged against the disease and she is just as determined to survive this time as she was the first two times she was diagnosed. And she is also a devoted Relay For Life participant.

There is a farmerâs market coming to town next month that will be open to all buyers and sellers.
It will begin July 1 and be set up every Friday through the summer from 7 a.m. till noon or a little before if farmers sell out.
The Hutchinson County Farmerâs Market is hoping to grow in its second year to provide consumers with an option to buy their vegetables fresh, according to Sandra Duke, Texas AgriLife Extension Service agent.
âWe have plenty of space for vendors, so we encourage individuals with large gardens or farmers to join the Farmerâs Market this year,â she said.

The Borger ISD board of trustees has approved a policy that would require certain employees to live within the city limits.
The action was taken during the boardâs regular Thursday evening, held at the BISD Administration Building.
Under the terms of the new policy, a district employee shall live within the boundaries of the district for the duration of employment for the following positions:
*Superintendent
*Assistant Superintendent
*Executive Director of Personnel
*Business Manager
*Director of Federal Programs and Instruction
*Director of Technology
*Athletic Director

It is almost time to Relay!
The annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Hutchinson County kicks off Friday, June 10, at 7 p.m. and will run through 7 a.m. Saturday, June 11. The event will be held at Huber Park in Borger.
This yearâs relay will be a celebration of cancer survivorship, and is a way to raise much-needed funds to help find a cure for cancer and funding programs that assist those in Hutchinson County suffering from the disease.
One of the goals of the local branch of the Texas Department of Public Safety is to ensure the safety of the community it serves.
Sgt. Joe Medrano of the DPS, along with Troopers Casey Dawson and Oscar Esqueda, attended the Tuesday meeting of the Rotary Club to share more about the work that is done by the department.
Medrano said he has been a Hutchinson County resident for 11 years. Initially, he said he didnât think he would be here very long, but truly enjoys living here and being a part of the community, as well as those with whom he works.

Two accidents happened on High Way 3395 near Bugbee early around midnight Saturday morning. Two life Star Helicopters were on the scene. There was no further information was available at press time.

With the windy weather and the threat of wildfire a constant in this region of Texas, local firefighters have been working hard to be sure this threat doesnât reach Borger.
The City of Borger has been using Firewise principles as a means of keeping its citizens safe from the threat of wildfire. Such principles have been the use of native plants for landscaping and the thinning of vegetation, which have made a significant difference in its ability to fight wildfires.
