FPC Board of Regents to meet on Monday

February 18, 2012

On Monday afternoon, the Frank Phillips College Board of Regents will hold its regularly scheduled February meeting. Items on the agenda the board will take action on include: Order and Notice for the General Election and Joint Election Order, State Employees Charitable Campaign, refinancing of 2001 bonds, and accepting of gifts and donations. Also during the meeting, the board will be provided information about the 2012 enrollment numbers and hear reports from the the college President, Vice-Presidents and Deans, and board members. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.

County candidates forum set for March 6

Election season is in full swing, and citizens will soon have the opportunity to hear from the candidates running for county office.
The Hutchinson County Republican Women are inviting the public to the Republican Candidates forum on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at Dake’s Restaurant, 718 North Main, in Borger. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The candidates will have an opportunity to speak with a question/answer period to follow. A reception will be provided at 6:30 p.m. and the forum starts at 7 p.m.

The flu is here!

Flu virus is spread mainly from person to person through the coughing sneezing, or talking of someone with the flu. Flu viruses also may spread when people touch something with the flu virus on it and then touch their mouth, eyes, or nose.
The Flu can infect people beginning 1 day before symptoms appear and up to 5-7 days after becoming sick.
Signs and Symptoms:
Sudden high fever and chills
Headache
Sore Throat and cough
Muscle/body aches
Feeling extremely tired
Vomiting/Diarrhea

The Center’s of Disease Control recommends a three step approach to fighting influenza.

RFL selling hamburgers and hot dogs on Saturday

Relay For Life of Hutchinson County Team United Supermarket will be selling juicy, delicious hamburgers and taste tempting hotdogs at the United Supermarket in Borger from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18. All proceeds from the fundraiser goes to the American Cancer Society via Relay For Life of Hutchinson County. Drop by the store and enjoy some delicious treats and join us in a "Race for a Cure!"

Groendyke Transport holds Million Mile Safety Banquet

Borger Groendyke Transport held a Million Mile Safety Banquet in January.
This award banquet was held at the Frank Phillips Conference Center on January 28, 2012. For the 48th time since the award program began in 1965, Groendyke Transport recognized the Borger Terminal drivers and employees for driving one million miles from September 21 to December 31, 2011 without a preventable accident. Employees and spouses were treated to a steak dinner along with a check, awards and gifts.

Fernandez ordered to forfeit close to $100,000

Amy Fernandez has to hand over close to $100,000 as part of a plea deal for illegally structuring monetary transactions to avoid federal reporting requirements.
On Monday February 13, 2012, U.S. District Judge Mary Lou Robinson stated Amy Fernandez is required to pay $99,950 to the government after her sentencing.
In November, Fernandez pleaded guilty for one count of evading the reporting requirements and the regulations issued thereunder, structure, attempt to structure, and attempted to assist in structuring currency transactions with one or more domestic financial institutions.

Demolition of old hospital building progressing

Although the date has not been set, the demolition of the 200 S. McGee property is progressing and should begin within the next week.
The general contractor JE Dunn has selected A and R demolition for this part of the project. Complete demolition is still pending the separation of steel and usable material from remaining structure and construction debris. Usable materials will be removed from the area, before structural demolitions starts. All utilities are in the process of being cut and capped.

Area resident wins trip to “The Price is Right”

An area resident may get to “come on down!”
Kim Charles, 55, of Pampa, who works at Golden Plains Community Hospital in Borger, won a trip for two to Las Vegas, Nev. After losing a “Price is Right” scratch-off, Charles sent in the ticket for a second chance to win. She and 24 other people won this trip.
The trip includes a four-day and three-night stay, travel expenses, two show tickets, tickets to “The Price is Right, and $5,000.

Lake Meredith, Alibates seek to update fire management plan

Lake Meredith National Recreation Area and Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument are seeking to update their fire management plan.
The two entities are proposing to update this plan to formally lay out the process and actions for prescribed burning on adjacent private ranchlands, including the attendant vegetation manipulation necessary along firelines to control these prescribed burns.

Officers make arrest after responding to disturbance

Borger police officers made an arrest last week after responding to a disturbance on Moody Street.
On Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at approximately 3:33 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance in the 800 block of Moody Street involving two male subjects with possible weapons involved.
