Arson case solved through tip to Crime Stoppers

An arrest made pertaining to an arson that occurred back in mid-January was due to a Crime Stoppers tip.
Lt. Anthony Griffin of the Borger Police Department said that Crime Stoppers received a tip from an individual having information in reference to an arson that occurred on Jan. 20, 2012, in the 1000 block of East Sixth Street.
This tip/information led to law enforcement officers solving the case, including an arrest being made. Due to this tip from Crime Stoppers, the individual was awarded $1,000.

Election season on the horizon

With spots on city councils, school boards, and other boards up for grabs, it is important for prospective candidates and voters to know dates pertaining to the upcoming election process.
Those interested in filing for a spot on the ballot have until 5 p.m. Monday, March 5 to do so. This is also the deadline for write-in candidates to file. It is also the last day to order a general election for May 12, 2012, the recommended date to appoint presiding and alternate judge, and the recommended date to order the lists of registered voters from the county voter registrar.

BISD board approves employment of district staff

The employment of various administrative staff members in Borger ISD was approved by the district board Thursday evening.
The action was taken following a closed session. Among those getting their contracts renewed for the upcoming year were:
•Assistant principals – Michael Cano – Borger Middle School; Dede Conaway and Mandy Poer – Borger High School
•Business Manager – Faye Hooper
•Director of Athletics – Rusty Purser
•Director of HAC SSA – Patti Brown
•Director for Instruction and Federal Programs – DeLila Holder
•Executive Director of Personnel – Tony McCarthy

Borger officials still investigating apartment fire

Borger officials are still investigating a fire that occurred at an abandoned apartment complex, but have ruled it as arson.

Teens arrested for setting of three different fires

Two teenagers were recently arrested for the intentional setting of three different fires.
On January 20, 2012, three fires occurred around 11 p.m. at Buttercup Day Care and City of Borger Government Housing.
According to Fire Marshal Jerry Langwell, the first fire occurred in one room at the day care, then two more were set in breezeways at the Housing Complex.
Two teenagers, ages 17 and 13, were arrested a week later for causing the three fires.
Due to the ages of the teenagers, no names were released.

Applications for FPC Board of Regents positions being taken through March 5th

Applications to file for a place on the ballot for the 2012 Board of Regents election can be filed February 4th through March 5th in the President’s Office at Frank Phillips College.
There are three six-year terms and one four-year unexpired term.
Currently the at-large six-year term positions are held by Jay Campbell, Sandra Hilbert, and Dr. Shad Goldston. The four-year unexpired term is for the Spring Creek District, currently held by Tonya Moore.
The six-year terms are elected at-large and the candidate must be a resident of the College District.

Accolade to hold heart screenings at Opportunities Center

With February being National Heart Awareness Month, local residents are encouraged to get heart health screenings for their overall well-being.
In an effort to detect heart health, Accolade Home Health Care will be offering confidential Heart Health Screenings to Borger residents and citizens from surrounding areas from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at the Opportunities Center in Borger.

Borger council calls election

The Borger City Council has officially called an election for this May.
During its regular meeting Tuesday, the council approved an order and notice calling the 2012 General City Election. The election will be held for one spot on the Borger City Council, Place One. This place is currently held by council member Leon DeWeese.

Council approves event center study

February 8, 2012

A feasibility study for a new events center in Borger has received the green light from the Borger City Council.
During its regular meeting Tuesday, the council approved the proposal from CS&L to conduct a feasibility study on a potential multi-purpose events center and authorize an expenditure from the tourism fund not to exceed $50,000 for the project.
