Borger woman convicted of building burglary

A Borger woman was convicted of burglary in district court on Tuesday.
On March 27, 2012, a Hutchinson County jury of eight men and four women convicted Cheryl Kathaleen Nixon, 40, of Borger, of burglary of a building. The burglar occurred on May 11, 2010, in a building off of 10th Street in Borger.
John Holland, the owner of the building, testified that on Tuesday morning around 10:30, he drove onto his property and saw a blue Oldsmobile parked behind one of his buildings. Holland told his wife to call the police and report the tag number, which she did.

Fernandez brothers, Salazar receive several months of Federal prison

The last three defendants associated with an October 2011 drug bust in Borger were sentenced March 30, 2012 in Federal court in Amarillo, by U.S. District Judge Mary Lou Robinson, announced U.S. Attorney Sarah R. Saldaña on Thursday.
Judge Robinson sentenced Jose Luis Fernandez. 37, to 109 months in federal prison and his brother, Aaron Steven Fernandez, 26, to 40 months.

HutchCares holds appreciation banquet

The Hutchinson County Child Welfare is preparing for its second annual “No Excuse For Abuse” 5k fun run/walk.
A local nonprofit organization took time to honor its volunteers at a special banquet Tuesday evening.
HutchCares Living At Home held its annual appreciation banquet Tuesday evening at Fairlanes Baptist Church. In addition to the banquet itself, a silent auction was also held as a fundraiser for the organization. Among the items auctioned were baked goods, household items, and gift certificates for various restaurants and services.

Kiwanis to hold Pancake Day this Saturday

The Borger Kiwanis Club will be holding its 54th annual Pancake Day this Saturday.
The event will be held from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, in the Frank Phillips College Cafeteria. Adult tickets cost $6 at the door and young children eat free.
All net proceeds from the Pancake Day go to charity, and a number of local and international projects and organizations have been helped by the Pancake Day money in the past.

David and Natasha Irvin (pictured with five-year-old Gabriella Irvin and four-year-old Elijah Irvin) used a truly unique machine to plant some Texas Red Oaks at the Hutchinson County Courthouse Monday. The trees will turn bright red once the fall season comes.

Sanford-Fritch Junior High helps fight MS

Sanford-Fritch Junior High School students have taken part in the Multiple Sclerosis Walk in Lubbock every year to help defeat the disease. This year they will walk for MS in Amarillo.
Sanford Fritch Junior High Aide Sandy Bryan stated, “My daughter Ashley was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis three years ago and since then we have had a team walk in the MS Walk every year. This will be our third. The team is a family and friend combination.”
Every year, kids involved with SFJH student council, ran by computer teacher Kem Mullens, help raise donations for their Walk MS team.

“No Excuse For Abuse” 5k run set for May 5

The Hutchinson County Child Welfare is preparing for its second annual “No Excuse For Abuse” 5k fun run/walk.
In honor of Child Abuse Awareness Month, the board will host the run on Saturday, May 5, 2012. Registration will be from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and the race start time is 9 a.m. Proceeds from the
The race will start and end at the Chamber of Commerce on Main Street. Packet pick-up will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the Borger Chamber of Commerce.
The cost is $25 for participants who register by April 13. Race Day Registration is $30.

Hutchinson County burn ban lifted

The Hutchinson County burn ban has been lifted for the time being, allowing residents to burn their trash freely.
On Monday, March 26, 2012, Commissioners met at the County Courthouse to discuss with Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards whether to consider or approve continuing or rescinding the County’s burn ban.
