ConocoPhillips reports fatality

A Borger ConocoPhillips employee sustained fatal injuries as the result of a fall Monday.
According to Janet D. Grothe, Senior Advisor for Health, Safety and Environment at Phillips 66 Company, at about 3 p.m., an employee at the ConocoPhillips refinery in Borger suffered from fatal injuries after falling. The employee was then transported to Golden Plains Community Hospital where he passed away.
“ConocoPhillips deeply regrets the loss of our employee and wishes to extend sympathy to the employee’s family, friends and co-workers,” said Grothe.

All HAIL the mighty spring weather

Borger residents heard an unfamiliar sound on their windows and roofs last night – the sound of rain and hail.
According to Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards, the storm came from Dumas and landed right in the middle of Borger – bringing 27 inches of hail and 18 inches of rain.
“Borger was lucky to receive marble size hail. Down by the Canadian Bridge and River, there were reports of half-dollar size and tennis ball size hail and Dumas had baseball size hail,” said Richards.

Phillips 66 spinoff effective today

The spinoff of the Phillips 66 company from ConocoPhillips is now official.
ConocoPhillips announced back in April that its board of directors gave final approval for the spin-off of its downstream businesses.
The resulting upstream company will keep the ConocoPhillips name and will be led by Chairman and CEO Ryan Lance.
The downstream company, led by Chairman and CEO Greg Garland, will be known as Phillips 66. Both companies will be headquartered in Houston.

Council to conduct public hearings

The Borger City Council will be conducting hearings during its upcoming meeting.
The meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2012, in the city council chambers of Borger City Hall.
During the meeting, the council will be holding hearings on the following matters:
•A request from Mr. Arvind Patel for a Specific Use Permit to place a manufactured home at the rear of 1415 W. Wilson (Lot N/2 23, Block “Y”, A&B Survey Addition).
•A request to rezone 900 N. Main (Lots 17-27, Block 5, Original Townsite), from Retail (R) zoning district to Commercial (C) zoning district.

Salvation Army giving youth chance to attend summer camp

The local Salvation Army is wanting to give local youth the chance to attend a special summer camp.
The organization is offering a free summer camp for youth ages 10-12. The camp will take place at Camp Hoblitzelle near Midlothian June 25-30, 2012.
There will be safe and fun activities with trained staff, which include fishing, swimming, boating, archery, golf, crafts, horseback riding, hiking, a zip line, team events, nature/science education and nightly chapel services on the lake.

Early voting is underway!

Early voting in local elections is underway!
Early voting for the election for Borger City Council will take place starting today through Friday, May 4 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and May 7-8 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at City Hall in Borger. Applications for ballots by mail must be received no later than the close of business May 4, 2012. These ballots are to be mailed to City Secretary Stella Sauls.
Candidates for Borger City Council are William Adams and Brandy Callahan.

Borger PD still seeking answers in business burglary

The Borger Police Department and Crime Stoppers are still seeking answers when it comes a recent business burglary.
Photos have been released by Borger PD in hopes of finding the suspect involved in the burglary, which occurred on Sunday, April 15, 2012. That day at around 9:40 a.m., officers from Borger PD responded to China Dynasty at 1030 Megert Circle in reference to the incident.
Lt. Anthony Griffin of the Borger Police Department said that when officers began investigating the burglary, it was found the incident occurred at around 1:20 a.m. that Sunday morning.

Callahan seeking election to Borger City Council

Brandy Callahan is seeking election to Borger City Council, Place One.
Callahan is a lifetime resident of Borger, except for the few years that she was away attending college.
“I chose to stay in Borger for several reasons,” she said. “First, all of my family lives here, second, it’s a great place to raise my children and establish roots, and third, Borger is a community with a lot of wonderful people. It is a community with the most caring and giving people I have ever met.”

Three arrested for narcotics violations

Detectives with Borger Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division went out on Wednesday, April 25, with intentions to find any illegal narcotics activity on the streets of Borger.
During their investigation they succeeded with not only one arrest, but three; Larry Clinton Turley, 40; Mark David Purcell II, 19; and Derek Duane Chisholm, 21, all of Borger.

Dr. Bill holding vaccination clinic Friday and Saturday

Dr. Bill will be holding his annual vaccination clinic Friday and Saturday. The event will be held until 6 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The clinic is being held at the Fritch fire station. Rabies vaccinations are $12.50, Distemper, Parvo costs $15, and Feline Distemper costs $12.50.
