Council OKs $14.7 million bids for wells

The Northwest Well Field moved another step closer to becoming a reality on Tuesday afternoon when the Borger City Council voted to approve a pair of bid recommendatuons for water project. And the good news is it won’t cost taxpayers as much as expected.

Frank Phillips College nets $242,646 grant from state

David Carr, Dean of Career and Technology at Frank Phillips College, learned last month that Susan Combs, Texas Comptroller of Accounts, has awarded the college a Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grant in the amount of $242,646.
Area employers who actively supported FPC’s grant request to the Texas Comptroller of Accounts include North Plains Electric Cooperative; Chevron Phillips Chemical, LP; and Hilmar Cheese.

VVA helps WWII vet recover lost medals

FRITCH - When members of the Vietnam Veterans Association’s Chapter 404 learned that Leroy George had lost all of the medals he had earned while serving his country in World War II in the May 11 wildfire, they knew something had to be done.
So they did it.

Guymon Youth Force helping making a difference in the lives of wildfire victims in Fritch

Sometimes it’s the youngest people in the world who can make the biggest difference in someone’s life, and that is exactly what a group of Oklahoma youngsters ranging from ages 12-18 from all over the state are doing.
Most of the groups participating with the Guymon Youth Force have been going to Fritch, according to Jacque Anderson.

Water levels up 7 feet at Meredith

Thanks to large amounts of rain in the Texas Panhandle area, Lake Meredith’s water levels have risen a large amount. According to Kent Satterwhite, general manager of The Canadian River Municipal Water Authority, Lake Meredith has gained about 7 feet in depth over the past 30 days. Since the water levels have risen, CRMWA officials have decided the lake is capable of supplying water to the region. CRMWA began pulling a small amount ofwater from the lake on Friday to supply and conserve water from the Ogallala Aquifer.

Cummings to speak at HCHM show

The Hutchinson County Historical Museum is once again flaunting the art of quilting to the public. Only this time it comes from a man’s point of view.
Archie Cummings will make his appearance at HCHM Quilt Show this Sunday. He will give a presentation on his thoughts about quilting beginning at 2 p.m.
 

Phillips High alumni kick off annual reunion this weekend

There will be plenty of familiar faces in Hutchinson County this weekend. They may look a little older than some remember, but they’re back to celebrate the black.
The Blackhawks, that is.
More than 300 Phillips High School alumni, teachers and school officials will converge on Borger and Stinnett to participate in the Phillips Alumni Association’s school reunion. The event is scheduled to run through Saturday, and will include the 50th reunion of the PHS Class of 1964.

Nikkinen is new Sanford secretary

The City of Sanford has a new face in a familiar place. Lesley Nikkinen was welcomed in as the new city secretary this week .
Nikkinen has lived in the Sanford area for about a year and previously lived in Tampa, Florida for 36 years prior to moving to Sanford.
Nikkinen said her new career was a result of a chance meeting with a local resident.
“I met someone through  the Elks Lodge.” she stated.
