BEDC plans to invest in potential Agrium project

January 10, 2013

The Borger Economic Development Corporation has made plans to invest in a potential expansion project for Agrium.
Dan Redd, CEO of the Borger EDC, said the corporation plans on investing $1 million in the project over a 10-year period. The money will be directed toward water wells and supply lines to supply additional water to the City of Borger’s water system as well as the proposed Agrium expansion project.
No final decision has been made on the Agrium project. However, what is proposed is an ammonia plant expansion and new urea production facility.

BISD board to meet Thursday

The Borger ISD board is set to meet this Thursday, Jan. 10.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Borger ISD Administration Building, 200 East Ninth.
The board will consider action on a resolution to suspend portions of EI (Local), EIA (Local), and EIC (Local) for the 2013 school year only. Action will also be taken on budget amendments, and items under the board's consent agenda, which include December meeting minutes, December payroll, December disbursements, and donations.

Stay awake at the wheel: your life depends on it

During the holidays there’s a lot of talk about drinking and driving.
But another less discussed cause of serious accidents and fatalities on the road involves people who are driving fatigued and fall asleep at the wheel.
In a sleep-deprived country like ours, you can bet there are plenty of people driving who shouldn’t be.
Fatigue behind the wheel can also cause delayed reactions and poor judgment calls, such as overlooking a stop sign or a red light, or drivers not realizing they have drifted into oncoming traffic.

Borger Community Blood Drive coming up Jan. 17

January 8, 2013

January is National Blood Donor Month. In the spirit of this month, local residents are encouraged to come out and give the gift of life.
The Borger Community Blood Drive is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Union Hall here in Borger, located at 111 East Coolidge.
All eligible donors who present to donate will receive a M*A*S*H* 2013 shirt in appreciation for giving the gift of life.
A photo ID or donor card is required, and donors must be at least 17 years of age to participate.

Jane Phillips Society presents donation to local elementary schools

Fran Braden and Darla Harriman with Jane Phillips Society presented a check for classroom supplies for the Crockett and Gateway School teachers. Accepting the check is Rachel Hughett, teacher. Those in attendance also were Superintendent Chance Welch, Mr. Jayson Hataway, Principal of Crockett School, Judy Riggle, Brenda Lowry, and Amber Byerly.

Snack Pack 4 Kids seeing success in Borger

The Snack Pack 4 Kids program is seeing success in the Borger area.
The mission of the program is to end weekend hunger for children living in the Texas panhandle by providing a backpack filled with kid friendly snacks each Friday of the school year. Borger Independent School District is among 15 school districts in the area participating in the program, and has been doing so since late 2012.

Murder charges filed in death of Lefors woman

January 4, 2013

Murder charges have been filed in the death of a woman in Lefors.
On Jan. 3, 2013, Texas Rangers served an arrest warrant for Joshua Keith Rigo, 28, of Amarillo, on the charge of murder, a felony of the first degree, in the death of Kristi Dawn Slatten, 42.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Daniel Hawthorne, Rigo was in custody in the Carson County Jail for the original charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
His bond was set at $300,000 and he remains in custody at the Carson County Jail.
