City Council confirms new Borger Police Chief

November 19, 2013

The Borger Police Department has a new Chief of Police.

In the regular meeting of the Borger City Council on Tuesday, November 19, the council voted to confirm Bruce Roberts as BPD Chief in a 3-2 split.

The motion to confirm was made by Council Member Charles Gillingham; and Councilman Marvin “Bubba” Dickson seconded. Mayor Jeff Brain joined Gillingham and Dickson while Councilwoman Brandy Callahan and Councilman Robert Vinyard voted against the motion.

Roberts has served as Captain in the BPD and has been in law enforcement for 30 years.

Missing Borger girl returns home safely

November 18, 2013

Melissa Graves, the fifteen year old Borger girl who went missing last Monday night has returned home to her family.

Graves, who left her home in the middle of the night a week ago, was spotted at a home owned by relatives of her alleged boyfriend, according to Debbie Goforth, the girl’s mother. After police were contacted, says the mom, Graves panicked and left through a back exit, making her way back home around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

Connecticut family pleads for father's return

November 18, 2013

A mother of two from Connecticut has contacted the Borger News-Herald with a plea for her husband, Michael, who left home two weeks ago and has not returned.

“Two weeks ago today my husband and my children’s daddy got up to go to work, kissed and hugged me goodbye told me he loved me. He walked out the door and never came back...” said Susan Cox of Kensington, CT, in a letter to the News-Herald.

Woman indicted in mail theft case

A Borger mail carrier has been indicted on charges of tampering with U.S. mail.
Postal carrier Lesa Marie Stark is facing three separate charges related to her alleged abuse of the U.S. postal service. The first charge, Theft of Mail, alleges that Stark embezzled a Veteran’s Administration prescription medication mailer from a resident on Pecan St..

Teenage girl vanishes in Borger

November 15, 2013

Fifteen year old Melissa Graves has been missing since late Monday night.
The Borger High School sophomore is thought to have left her house sometime between 2:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Melissa is around 5'2" tall and weighs 97 lbs. She has long light-brown hair with blonde tips.
Her bottom lip is pierced in a "snakebite" fashion, where there are two piercings: one of each side about halfway between the center of the bottom lip and the corners of the mouth. She has double piercings in her ears and her navel is also pierced.

Three dead in plane crash near Amarillo

November 11, 2013

A plane crash east of Amarillo resulted in three deaths early Monday morning.
According to Sr. Trooper Chris Ray of the Department of Public Safety, at around 2:00am the DPS received a report of a missing aircraft, a single-engine 1999 Raytheon B36TC.

The aircraft had been en route to Tradewind Airport in Amarillo when it was rerouted to Rick Husband, which it overflew. Air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane as it came around for a second landing attempt and a search for the aircraft began.
