Now that all the fireworks have been popped, what was the damage in between?
According to Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards, the trouble spots on Independence Day were Highway 136, Fritch, and Borger, creating 23 fires total. The largest fire was on Highway 136 near the Westlawn Cemetery, damaging around 20 acres.
âLuckily there were no reports of injuries and there was no structure damage,â said Richards.

Citizens are advised to watch their cars for theft this month during âWatch Your Car Month.â
Most people think they live and work in safe neighborhoods where auto theft and burglary donât happen. They think they donât drive a vehicle new or nice enough to be targeted by a thief. They sometimes think the things they keep in their vehicle donât have any value to a thief. Well, they should think again!
A vehicle crime is committed in Texas every two minutes. Just because citizens live or work in neighborhoods with low crime rates, those areas are not immune to vehicle crimes.

The Borger City Council has made appointments to the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
During its regular meeting Tuesday, the council approved a resolution reappointing Mike Blansett and Gene Gallegos to another regular term, appointing James Baker, alternate member, to regular member status; reappointing Brad Carpenter to alternate member status, and appointing Dale Gallaspy as a new alternate member. The terms will expire June 30, 2014.

A Borger ISD board member has earned the designation of Master Trustee.
Todd Harris, who currently serves as vice-president of the BISD Board of Trustees, earned this designation upon completion of Leadership TASB, a program sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB).
During the fifth session, which took place June 14-16, school board members participating in the 2011-12 Leadership TASB made presentations of their teamsâ findings following year-long research.

Borger resident Kenneth Herin, 73, was found deceased Sunday after a small fire inside a one-bedroom apartment on Harvey Street.
On Sunday, the Borger Fire Department was dispatched at 1:17 p.m. to the 400 block of Harvey.
Upon arrival, the fire was already extinguished.
According to Borger Fire Marshal Jerry Langwell, the State Fire Marshal has been assisting with the investigation. The autopsy and evidence shows the cause of death was the result of Herin smoking while on oxygen. Herin was pronounced dead on July 1, 2012, by the Justice of the Peace.

A Borger Benniganâs employeeâs life has been changed by a simple Facebook post.
On March 28, Hannah Hobbs, a waitress at a Benniganâs restaurant in Borger, posted a photo of a glass of beer, with a handwritten note from the customer that read âIn memory of Lt. j.g. Francis Toner, USN. Killed in action 27 March 2009, Balkh Province, Afghanistan. âNon sibi said patriaeâ NOT FORGOTTEN!â
Not only did this photo get over 1,071,335 âlikesâ and shared more than 96,047 times on Facebook, she was sent to New York City to appear on CNN live somewhere between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Wednesday.

With the Fourth of July right around the corner, many people are getting their fireworks displays ready. While many in Borger consider fireworks harmless, they can still do some major damage if youâre not careful.

A favorite breakfast hot spot for many local residents reopened for business on Monday!
Mr. Treat Donuts reopened its doors this Monday, July 2, under the new ownership of Ken and Sylvia Brockett. The business will be open from 5 a.m. until noon Monday through Saturday.
Ken said he had difficulty seeking employment, and when he saw the article in the newspaper regarding the closure of Mr. Treat Donuts, he was interested in reopening it.
He got in touch with the former owner Teresa Bellow, got some particulars, and decided to go forward with purchasing the business.

A Longview author is donating her first newly published book to her hometown of Borger.
Tijuana Edwards-Taylor just published her first Christian book titled âThe Adventures of Buddy Blue Bug and the Critter of the Gospel,â illustrated by R. JeneĂ© Wilson.
