Sentencing dates set for Fernandez family, others

According to United States Attorney Sarah R. Saldaña, Northern District of Texas Judge Mary Lou Robinson ordered sentencing dates for the Fernandez family and others involved in the case.

Flex Lab gives high school students much-needed opportunities

Even with the closing of CHAMPS Academy, the development of a program by Sanford-Fritch High School is helping those who need it to graduate from high school.
Sometime in early 2010, CHAMPS in Fritch was closed due to low funding. CHAMPS Academy was an alternative, non-traditional, high school for students of Borger, Dumas, Panhandle, Plemons-Stinnett-Phillips, Sanford-Fritch, and Sunray.

Sargent running for county commissioner

Nathan Sargent is running for the position of County Commissioner, Precinct 3.
Sargent has lived in Hutchinson County for 52 years. He has been farming for 38 years, and now owns and operates his family farm.
He attends First Baptist Church of Stinnett, where he is also involved in ministries of the church. He has served on the Pringle/Morse School Board, and currently serves on the Board Coop. He is married to Donna Burris, and has two grown children and six grandchildren. He enjoys following his grandchildren in their activities, and also enjoys riding four-wheelers and hunting.

A busy weekend of stock show activities

It was a busy weekend for the youth participating in the Hutchinson County Junior Livestock Show. The sale to conclude the weekend’s events took place Saturday evening at Graced Land East. Among those having his animals auctioned was Jess Shields, pictured, who took Grand Champion honors in the hog and steer categories.

Blood drive set for Feb. 6

As a reminder for those wanting to save a life, the Coffee Memorial Blood Center will hold a blood drive February 6, 2012 at Frank Phillips College from 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Center for Access and Innovation Building Conference Center room at 901 S. Opal.
A photo ID or donor card is required to donate, and donors must be at least 17 years of age to be eligible to give blood. All blood types are needed.
All eligible donors who present to donate will receive a free t-shirt in appreciation for giving the gift of life.

BNH still accepting entries for Don Rice special section

The time is drawing closer for a significant milestone for one of the most familiar faces at the Borger News-Herald!
Don Rice will be celebrating 50 years as the photographer for the BNH this March, coming to the paper in 1962.
In his honor, the BNH is doing a special section featuring some of his most prominent photos from the decades he has been on staff here.
However, the BNH plans to take it one step further, and this will require help from you!

HCSO seeking info on building burglary

The Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Office and Crime Stoppers are seeking assistance in reference to a building burglary.
According to Borger Police Department Lt. Anthony Griffin of Crime Stoppers, the burglary occurred on Monday, Jan. 23, 2012. HCSO responded to 8831 Highway 152, near Stinnett, in reference to a burglary of a building (business).
Upon investigation, it was discovered that sometime between Jan. 13 and Jan 22, 2012, several items were taken from the building by an unknown person or persons.
The stolen items identified to date are listed as follows:

Parents make donation to county stock show

The Hutchinson County 4-H Parent Leaders donated $1,000 to the Hutchinson County Junior Livestock Show. Present for the giving of the donation were County Extension Agent Kristy Synatschk, Skylar Jewett, Karsen Prall, Zach Jewett, Brooke Armstrong, Ryann Washer, Sandy Sanchez, Diana Jack, and John Davis.

Xcel Energy files for lower fuel costs

Xcel Energy has filed for lower fuel costs in the state of Texas.
Yesterday, the company submitted plans to the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) for a revised fuel cost formula and factor that will reduce residential bills of 1,000 kilowatt-hours by an average of $1.83, or about 1.8 percent, starting April 1.
