BFD responds to Christmas Eve fire call

December 27, 2011

Borger fire crews were busy on Christmas Eve fighting a fire on Coble Street.
A fire broke out inside a home on the 900 block of Coble. The fire gutted the inside of the home, according to Fire Chief Bob Watson. The fire occurred at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 24, and was contained within 30 minutes. The fire crews did not leave the scene till 8:30 p.m.

Helping Hand receives generous donation

December 27, 2011

High Plains Helping Hand recently received a generous donation on behalf of a local Scout pack.
Prior to the Christmas holidays, Rob Marr, representing Cub Scout Pack 565, delivered 2,280 pounds of food to the organization’s headquarters, in addition to a cash donation of $236.48.
Carolyn Poindexter, who is with High Plains Helping Hand, said the donation will greatly benefit not only the organization itself, but those who are in need during the holidays and all year long.
“We got so much food,” she said. “We are so blessed.”

Ralls Appliance, partners make large donation to needy families

A local business is doing its part once again to meet the needs of families this holiday season.
Ralls Appliance received enough qualifying purchases during their annual Refrigerator Donation Sale to donate refrigerators to seven local families in need.
Jack Klaus, owner of Ralls Appliance, said the business is extremely excited about the support its customers have shown for this program.

When is a visit to the emergency room appropriate?

Every day, and especially this time of year, individuals encounter an illness or injury and a decision is often made to go to the emergency room and seek treatment. While many times this is the right decision to make, many more times a more appropriate place to seek treatment is at a doctor’s office or clinic.

When to go to the emergency room:
Go to the emergency room or call 911 if you or a family member is experiencing any of the following symptoms and/or complaints: heart attack, uncontrollable bleeding, severe allergic reaction, stroke, fracture, and difficulty breathing.

City to file petition on property abatements

December 27, 2011

The City of Borger is planning to file petitions in district court for the abatement of two different properties.
After a closed session held Tuesday afternoon, the Borger City Council approved action to allow City Prosecutor David Holmes to file petitions in 84th Judicial District Court for the abatement of substandard structures at 117 West Second and 117 Deahl.

County receives over two inches of snow

December 22, 2011

It has snowed once again in Hutchinson County.
According to Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards, the county got a small taste of a large storm, getting a little over two inches of snowfall. Richards also stated Borger should be expecting more precipitation and snow around noon today. He continued to say that Hutchinson County is still severely behind nine inches for precipitation.

Borger man sentenced to 45 years for 2010 murder

December 21, 2011

A Borger man has been sentenced to 45 years for a murder that occurred in the spring of 2010.
Yesterday, visiting 316th District Judge David Gleason sentence Jose Israel Rodas, 38, of Borger, to 45 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for the April 17, 2010, slaying of 36-year-old Gloria Arias.

Borger PD: Watch for counterfeit dollar bills

December 21, 2011

The Borger Police Department and Crime Stoppers are asking citizens to be on their guard when it comes to counterfeit bills.
Lt. Anthony Griffin of BPD said that over the past couple of weeks, the department has taken several reports in reference to counterfeit $20 bills being passed again in the Borger area.
“So far, these counterfeit bills have been reported as being passed at five local locations,” he said.
Anyone who receives currency that is suspected of being counterfeit is encouraged to contact BPD at 806-273-0930.

Banks and credit unions observing holiday hours

December 21, 2011

All banks and credit unions in Borger will be closed for certain dates for Christmas and New Year’s. The hours are as follows:

•Happy State Bank hours will be from 9 a.m. - 3p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22 and Friday Dec. 23, 2011. They will be closed Monday, Dec. 26 and resume regular lobby hours from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and drive thru hours from 7:30 – 6 p.m. for Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011.

•Borger Bank will be closed Monday, Dec. 26 and resume regular lobby hours from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. and drive thru 7:30 – 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011.
