Firefighters responded to a structure fire Friday afternoon on Grand Street.
A old vacant apartment building was engulfed in flames as firefighters arrived on the scene.
Firefighters from the Borger Fire Department arrived on the scene at 4:13 p.m. on Friday, August 12, 2011, bringing two engine trucks, one ladder, and one command vehicle.
According to Borger Fire Marshal Jerry Langwell, the building was already in bad shape and the cause of the fire is sill under investigation.
Firefighters left the scene at 9:11 p.m. that night. There were no injuries reported.
A special fund has been set up in memory of Tomas Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, 18, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2011, during an outing to Lake Mackenzie in Briscoe County. About to enter his senior year at Borger High School, Rodriguez worked in produce at United Supermarkets in Borger.
Jennifer Hoeltzel, Assistant Produce Manager at United in Borger, said she worked closely with Rodriguez.
â€śHe was an incredible young man that is dearly missed by all who knew him,â€ť she said.
One of Borgerâ€™s newest family practice physicians is also Borger born and raised!
Dustin Hawley, M.D. is a graduate of Borger High School and attended Frank Phillips College and Texas Tech University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in biology in 2003.
His graduation from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine put him into the field of medicine in 2008.
â€śI was born at North Plains Hospital,â€ť he said. â€śDr. Hull delivered me and Dr. Prewitt was our family doctor.â€ť
