City considering changes to animal control ordinance

Officials seeking opinions from the public prior to passage

The City of Borger is considering changes to its animal control ordinance. However, before these changes are made, it is seeking input from the public regarding these pending changes.
Eddie Edwards, Borger City Manager, said that in order to allow ample time for public comment, the city council will conduct a public hearing on the proposed Animal Control Ordinance at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011.

BISD naming four recipients to honor wall

Borger ISD will officially name four recipients to its Honor Wall in a special ceremony this week.
Ellen Coffman, Cleo Morrison, Gerald Myers, and Jeep Webb will be honored during a reception at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, at Borger High School. The four will also be recognized during half time of the BHS Homecoming football game on Friday evening.
Coffman and Webb are retired Borger ISD employees, and Morrison and Myers are Borger ISD alumni.

Plans in works for Christmas parade

Plans are currently in the works for the Borger Chamber of Commerce Annual Christmas Parade.
The parade is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 5. Entry forms will be available starting on Nov. 1, at the Chamber of Commerce office, located at 613 North Main in Borger.
All entries will need to be decorated in a holiday motif and is asked to depict the Christmas season.
Beverly Benton, CEO of the Borger Chamber of Commerce, said businesses, clubs, churches, and individuals are invited to take part in this fun way to begin the Christmas season.

CRMWA general manager receives PRPC award

The general manager of the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority was recently named the recipient of a special award from the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission.
Kent Satterwhite, who serves as the general manager of CRMWA, received the PRPC’s Regional Service Award at the organization’s annual meeting and banquet, which was held on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, in the Amarillo Civic Center Heritage Room.

The Cat in the Hat promotes 4-H to BIS students

(Editor’s Note: In honor of Oct. 2-8 being National 4-H Week, the Hutchinson County 4-H will be running a series of articles throughout this week’s editions of the Borger News-Herald.)

County Extension agents Kristy Synatschk and Sandra Duke brought a special friend to the Borger Intermediate school on Tuesday, October 4th, to share a message about 4-H.
More than 200 5th graders got to go on a virtual journey as Duke read a special 4-H version of the classic Dr. Seuss book “Oh, the Places You’ll Go”.

Moonlight Madness taking place this Friday

Main Street will be abuzz with activity this Friday as the Borger Downtown Merchants host their Moonlight Madness event.
The event will take place on October 7, 2011 from 6 p.m. until midnight.
During this event, there will be a pumpkin carving contest. All entries will be displayed in store windows and voted on by those who attend Moonlight Madness. The winner of the contest will receive a $50 gift certificate that can be spent at one of the participating stores.

Frank Phillips College releases fall enrollment numbers

After the talk surrounding the state legislature looking into placing Frank Phillips College on the list of community colleges to potentially lose state funding in January, a fair question to ask was, how the negative news would potentially impact the college’s enrollment this fall.
During the FPC Board of Regents meeting on September 19th, the college released their head count for the fall semester which showed 839 academic students and 271 career and technical students for a total of 1033.

Hospital completion certificate accepted

A certificate of substantial completion for the new Golden Plains Community Hospital has officially been accepted by the Hutchinson County Hospital District Board of Directors.
The certificate was officially signed by Dr. Jock Lee, DVM, Chairman of the HCHD board, during the board’s regular meeting Monday evening.
Dennis Jack, CEO of GPCH, said the certificate is a document that came with the USDA funding. It is one of the very last documents that needs to be finalized, stating that the elements of the construction contract have been substantially met.

HOPE golf tournament taking place this Saturday

Come be a part of the 13th Annual HOPE Golf Scramble taking place this Saturday, October 8th at the Borger Country Club Golf Course.
Sign-ups for the tournament have been extended to Thursday, October 6th until 5:00 p.m.
There will be prizes for the closest to pin, longest drive, and more. One of the prizes includes a silver 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, donated by Country Chevrolet, for a person who hits a hole-in-one.
Teams of four people can enter for an entry fee of $240.00.
All proceeds are used to support cancer research.

Small-Fry Fishing Tourney set for this weekend

On Saturday, the annual Small-Fry Fishing Tournament will be held at the Stilling Basing at Spring Canyon in the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area.
The Small-Fry Fishing Tournament is an annual event which promotes the sport of fishing while encouraging good clean family fun.
This event is a wonderful fun-filled opportunity for families to share in one of the best recreational activities available in the Texas Panhandle.
There is no entrance fee, and youth of all income levels are invited to participate.
Last year over eighty children participated in the tournament.
