April 20, 2011

Lorraine Powell Johnson, 92, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at Parks Assisted Living in Odessa.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Stockton, Texas with Dr. Jim Miles officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Sunset Funeral Home in Odessa. Private graveside services will be held in Panhandle, Texas.

Lady Bulldogs fight back but lose 6-5 to Dalhart

After falling behind 0-5 to the Dalhart Lady Wolves, the Borger Lady Bulldogs showed a lot of heart on Tuesday evening, by battling back to tie the game 5-5 going into the seventh inning.
Unfortunately, Dalhart used two walks and two singles in the top of the seventh to bring around one run that ultimately ended the game with the 6-5 win in District 1-3A play.

Lake marina acting on abandoned boats

With some abandoned boats moved from The Marina at Lake Meredith, workers out there are trying to figure out the best course of action for those boats.
With the low lake levels, the decision was made by the National Park Service late last year that the drop had resulted in lake levels that could no longer support marina services. The services that were provided at LMNRA were discontinued on Jan. 1, 2011.
Abandoned boats were moved to a parking lot and all docks and dock buildings will be demolished and recycled.

Bulldogs hang on to beat Dalhart, earn at least a share of the district crown

On Tuesday evening the Big Red Machine continued to roll at the plate, as the Borger Bulldogs had three players, Max Lusk, Garrett Irwin and Kody Davila, send balls over the fence in their District 1-3A contest with the Dalhart Golden Wolves.
The Bulldogs jumped out on top early building a 5-0 lead after two innings. But the team experienced a little bit of a scare as Dalhart battled back to eventually take a 8-9 lead by the sixth inning.

WT’s Forrest earns trip to 1A State Golf Tournament

Tuesday afternoon, West Texas High sophomore Nathan Forrest earned a trip to the 1A state golf tournament by finishing fourth individually in the boys standings at the 1A Region I Golf Tournament in Lubbock.
The Borger Lady Bulldogs’ golf season came to an end on Tuesday in the 3A Region I Tournament, finishing in 10th place.

Council makes decisions on property demolitions

The Borger City Council has made decisions on two property demolitions that were appealed by local citizens.
The actions were taken during the regular meeting of the council, held Tuesday afternoon at Borger City Hall.
The first property in question was 821 Moody, owned by C.C. “Bud” Reynolds. He told the council that he planned to demolish the property and clear the lot on his own. However, he said he had some workers he plans to put to work on the demolition and didn’t want to put them out of business.

Health fair just around the corner!

It’s almost time for the 2011 Hutchinson County Free Health Fair and committee preparations are well underway!
The H.C. Free Health Fair will be held at the Frank Phillips College Access & Innovation Center located at 901 Opal in Borger on Friday, May 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sponsors for the event are the Borger Chamber of Commerce, Frank Phillips College School of Nursing, Texas AgriLIFE Extension, and Golden Plains Community Hospital.

Jill Schneider chosen to lead National Team

On Monday, former Phillips High School athlete and Borger Lady Bulldog Head Basketball Coach Jill Schneider was selected as the head coach for the 2011 Team USA Women’s Under-16 National Team.
“It’s an incredible honor to have been selected to coach this team,” Schneider said in a statement released by USA Basketball.

West Texas athletes compete in local Special Olympic Events

The West Texas Special Olympic Team competed in the Dumas Special Olympic Track Meet this past Saturday. Where all of the Comanche athletes had a great time.
The team will next take part in the West Texas Special Olympics that will take place in Stinnett on Saturday, April 30th.
The Opening Ceremonies will being at 9:00 a.m. and the public is invited to come out and watch all the Panhandle area teams compete.
