Barbara J. Vaden, 79, of Borger, passed away, Thursday, April 7, 2011.
Barbara Joan Scroggins Vaden was born Sunday, November 1, 1931 in Tulsa, OK to Herb and Elizabeth (Long) Scroggins. She married Lawrence Vaden on June 25, 1968 in Clayton, NM. She was a homemaker.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Lawrence Vaden; her son, Herbert Dale Force; and her sister, Shirley Ileen Scroggins.

Three cities see rise in sales tax allocations

The Cities of Fritch, Sanford, and Stinnett saw an increase in their sales tax allocations for the month of April 2011, while Borger saw a decrease.
On Friday, Texas Comptroller Susan Combs sent April sales tax allocations of $279.4 million to Texas cities, up 5.2 percent compared to April 2010. Calendar year-to-date, city sales tax allocations are running 6.7 percent higher than last year. Texas counties will receive sales tax payments of $26.6 million, up 11.1 percent compared to one year ago. Calendar year-to-date, county sales tax allocations are 13.2 percent higher than last year.

Elks Lodge honors local citizens

Last weekend, the Elks Lodge held its Annual Inaugural Ball to honor citizens in the community.
The Elks hold this every year in April to exchange their old officers for the new and to award citizens who make a difference.
This year’s Citizen of the Year was Bill Riddle of Riddle’s Welding off of Florida St.
The lodge also awarded Bob Tiffany the Elk of the Year award. Terrye Hooks was named the Officer of the year. The Elks also announced that Steve Slaybaugh is the new Exalted Ruler.

Comanches wrap up first half of district play vs Claude

On Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m., the West Texas High Comanches will try to end the first half of District 6-1A play on a high note by trying to get a win over the Claude Mustangs. The game will be a match up of two teams with identical 3-1 district marks.
With the Mustangs and Comanches both one game behind Follett in the standings, Comanches Head Coach Steven Coursey understands how big a win tomorrow will be for his team, saying, “I really hope to get a big win and put ourselves in position that when we play Follett again, it will be a game with the district title on the line.”

Borger Tennis Team claim District 1-3A title

On Thursday the Borger High School Tennis team took advantage of playing on their home courts to win the 1-3A district championship by defeating Pampa, Perryton, and Dalhart. Winning, and finishing the spring season undefeated, was the mixed doubles team of Josh Madden and Abbie Madden.
After receiving a bye and cruising in their second round match 6-0, 6-0, the match between Madden and Madden vs Silva and Gage of Pampa was touted to be a very tough match up, but in the end the strength of the brother-sister duo was too much, with the Maddens winning 6-2,6-4.

Local youth soccer players take part in soccer camp preview

Thursday evening Nick Rundell of Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp held a free preview for soccer players in the area to demonstrate some of the skills and exercies the players can learn when the camp comes to Borger in July.
The camp will be open for players ages 3-14 years old.

St. John’s to hold annual spaghetti dinner

A local parish is set to host its annual spaghetti dinner in just two days.
St. John’s Catholic Church, at 201 St. John’s Road, will hold its 56th annual Italian meatballs and spaghetti dinner from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2011.
Tickets are currently available for adults and children and will also be available at the door the day of the dinner. Take-outs will be available as well.

HCHD continues EMS consolidation discussion

Discussion on the consolidation of EMS services in Hutchinson County continued Monday evening during the regular meeting of the Hutchinson County Hospital District Board of Directors.
The proposal that has been discussed for several months now is the possibility of consolidating the EMS services of Borger, Fritch, and Stinnett into a County EMS that would be managed by the HCHD.

District 1-3A Tennis Tournament underway

April 7, 2011

The District 1-3A Tennis Tournament got underway this morning bringing tennis players to Borger from Pampa, Dalhart and Perryton.
Through the morning matches, Borger Head Tennis Coach Jeff Pinkerton said he was pleased so far on how well his players have done.
The tournament will last throughout the day.
