Charles M. Darnell

August 22, 2011

Charles M. Darnell, 94, of Borger died Friday August 19, 2011, at his home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at Calvary Baptist Church with Jeff Hutchison, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Resthaven Garden at Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Charles was born Jan. 18, 1917, at Haskell, Texas, to Edward Franklin and Maggie Virginia Darnell. He worked as an iron worker for 30 years. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a Borger resident for 69 years.

L.D. “Dick” Greene

L. D. “Dick” Greene Jr., 72, of Stinnett, died Saturday August 20, 2011, in Borger.
Funeral services will be at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at Riverview Baptist Church with Preacher Jimmy Gillmore officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

Linda Jo Cranfill

Linda Jo Cranfill, 65, of Levelland, died Friday Aug. 19, 2011, in Levelland.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday Aug. 22, 2011, at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Leonard Forsythe, pastor of Bible Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Garden Of Beatitudes at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch.
Linda was born March 5, 1946, in Borger to Olin and Jean Cranfill.
She is survived by her brother Larry and wife Beverly Cranfill of Fritch, Texas.

The circus is coming to town!

The American Crown Circus will be in Borger on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011 at the Hutchinson County Sheriffs Posse Rodeo Arena, behind McDonald’s.
The shows will be at 6 and 8 p.m.
Past and present performers in this circus have entertained audiences for over 82 years throughout U.S.A., Mexico, Central America and Canada.
They were featured with the tented shows of Carson & Barnes and Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus. From there they went to parks including the Great Escape Park, New York; Busch Gardens, Florida to Knott’s Berry Farm, California.

FPC sets goals for upcoming year

Last Monday, the Frank Phillips College Board of Regents accepted the college mission statement and goals for 2011-12 that were developed by the the Frank Phillips College administration in collaboration with FPC faculty and staff.
The college will develop and implement a plan to increase enrollment and contact hours by ten percent, as well as preparing future budgets in preparation to future changes in state funding.
One area in which FPC is looking to expand enrollment is by developing a permanent institutional presence in Dalhart.

HOPE 2011 set for Sept. 24

HOPE 2011 is now just a little over a month away!
This year’s event is set to take place on Sept. 24, 2011, at the Crutch Ranch, with a theme of “Fiesta de la HOPE – Viva la Cure!!!”
The box office for HOPE will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Wells-Fargo Bank, located at 503 North Deahl in Borger. Tickets are $180 and admit one couple. Purchases will continue until sell-out.
No one under the age of 21 will be admitted and an ID and HOPE ticket will be required for entrance into the event. The bartender will have the right to check IDs.

Wal-Mart Super Center possible if pipeline is moved

On Thursday afternoon, the Borger Economic Development Corporation agreed to provide funds which will be used to move pipelines from an area of land being considered for the future home of a Wal-Mart Super Center.
Local businessman Odis McClellan came before the Borger EDC Board of Directors to see if the EDC would help in the rerouting of pipeline on land located between Highway 136 and Carbon Road next to the new hospital, in order for the land to be used for development.

Borger Freshmen take fourth place in River Road Tournament

Last weekend, the Borger Lady Bulldogs Freshmen volleyball team came in fourth place at the Amarillo River Road Tournament.
Last Friday, the girls won their first three matches to put them in the Gold Bracket on Saturday.
In bracket play, the Lady Bulldogs lost to Bushland and Pampa to take fourth place.

Land purchase will help event center plans move forward

On Thursday afternoon, the Borger Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors approved the purchase of 139 acres of land off Fairlanes Boulevard (Ranch Road 1551). Thirty acres will be designated for the construction of a new multi-event center.
According to Borger EDC CEO Dan Redd, the 139 acres will be purchased at a price of $1,000 per acre for a total cost of $139,000 and will be the home for future EDC projects.
Redd said, “The development of the land will allow for easy access to Highways 207 and 136 and that will be great for the event center and future projects.”

Taco Villa not coming to Borger at this time

Do you want a Taco Villa in Borger? You may be waiting for awhile.
Representatives at Bobby Cox Companies corporate office out of Fort Worth, who owns Taco Villa, stated they have received several calls to bring Taco Villa to Borger and they have noted it, but there is no plan to bring a Taco Villa back to Borger at this time.
Citizens have been interested in bringing a Taco Villa back to the area. Local people have started a Facebook page called “Borger Villa,” with over 2677 people joining in this petition to bring Taco Villa back to Borger.
