Large crowd gathers for memorial service

The people of Hutchinson County made a point to ensure that the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, will not be forgotten.
Close to 300 people were in attendance at a special 9/11 Memorial Service held Sunday afternoon in Huber Park.
The service was held in the area where a 9/11 monument, currently in the works, will be placed.

(Editor’s Note: The following speech was given by Judge William D. Smith during a special 9/11 memorial service held Sunday afternoon at Huber Park.)

My friends, we gather here today to pay homage and tribute to those who are no longer with us but whose memory will long affect us.
We, like millions of other Americans, remember what we did and where we were 10 have not forgotten our feelings and emotions – sometimes of helplessness, of frustration, of forlorn, and of anger – as we watched planes crash, fires burn, buildings tumble and victims, along with brave rescuers, die.

9/11: A firsthand account

Dr. Edward Quiros and his wife, Dr. Corazon P. Quiros of Borger, were just two of the many people who saw the attacks on September 11, 2001.
“Everything just stopped,” Corazon said.
On 9/11, Dr. C.P. and her husband were in New York City where they were spending a few days to attend a re-certification review course for the American College of Surgeons Board.
“Our hotel was right beside Empire State Building,” said Dr. C.P.
At the time that it happened, Dr. C.P. was waiting for her sister-in-law, who was coming from New Jersey.

Donna Gay Hunter

Funeral services for Donna Gay Hunter, 63, of Fritch will be 3:00 p.m. Monday at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Borger with Rev. Ted and Jody Wilson officiating. 
Interment will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Donna was born in Clayton, NM and graduated from Del Norte High School in Albuquerque, NM where she was a cheerleader. She retired from Phillips Petroleum Co. and received her Realtor’s license.  Her life centered on loving people and she loved her family more than anything. 

Jacquelyne Cromwell

On September 5, 2011, at the age of 80, Jacquelyne Cromwell was welcomed by the Lord and reunited with the love of her life, Stan Cromwell. She was preceded in death by Stan, her husband of 53 years in 2002; her parents, Eva and E.W. “Jack” Martin; and her sister Patricia Sue Sahli.

Bulldogs hang on for a 27-23 win over Bushland

On Friday evening, the Borger Bulldogs benefited from their strong running game and physical defense to come away with a 27-23 over the Bushland Falcons at Bulldog Stadium.
After giving up 571 yards to Caprock last Thursday, the Bulldog defense looked like a completely different unit on Friday night limiting the Falcons’ offense to 246 yards of total offense.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs did not have to worry about moving the ball in the air due to racking up 342 yards on the ground, led senior Adam Bumpus rushing for 228 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries.

Comanches bag the Bucks to remain undefeated

WHITE DEER-It only took 12 seconds for the West Texas Comanches to let White Deer know they were not going to be very gracious visitors Friday night. Senior Colin Coleman took the opening kick off 80 yards for a touchdown, as WT High played their first road game of the season. Alex Ramirez added the PAT and WT was up 7-0 with most of the first quarter left.

Stratford Elks defeat Sanford-Fritch 34-18

STRATFORD-On Friday evening, ehe Sanford-Fritch Eagles fought hard against the Straford Elks but couldn’t prevail 34-18. The absence of key players due to injuries, and multiply penalties would be key reasons for the loss.
In the first quarter, the Elks scored quick on a run by senior RB Alex Chavoya. No other points were scored in that quarter.
Second quarter had Sanford-Fritch answering with many exchanges by both Bryans (Chris & Terry) before Chris ran a short yardage touchdown. The extra point didn’t count.

Borger PD investigating assault

Late Thursday night between the hours of 9:45 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on September 8, 2011, A female victim was walking on Union Street heading towards Keeler Heights addition. The female victim was at the bottom of the hill on Union Street, when a white male, wearing a mask, approached her and assaulted her from behind.

Borger Bulldogs look to get into the win column on Friday against Bushland

On Friday night, the Borger Bulldogs hope to get their first win of the season when they take on the Bushland Falcons at 7:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
After falling 63-49 to Amarillo Caprock last Thursday, the Bulldogs find themselves experiencing some deja vu of last season when they held a 0-2 record going into the Bushland game.

The Borger Bulldogs boys basketball team cruised past San Jacinto earlier this week, 64-52. The win...
