Mabel Louise Gunter

September 1, 2011

Funeral services for Mabel Louise Gunter, 88, formerly of Borger, will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Gateway Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Rawlinson, Pastor officiating. 
Interment will follow at Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Louise was born July 6, 1923 in Burkburnett, TX, to Forrest and Angie Glidewell.  She had been a resident of Phillips and Borger for the past 75 years.  She married J. C. Gunter April 1, 1944 in Phillips, TX. He preceded her in death in 2004.  She was a member of Gateway Baptist Church.

Zelma Mae Wood

Funeral services for Zelma Mae Wood, 82, will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Minton Memorial Chapel with Kyle Holley of Amarillo officiating. 
Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Pampa under the direction of Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Mrs. Wood was born in Cordell, Okla., July 1, 1929, to Albert and Flora Bell Harbin.  She married William Benson Wood April 29, 1944, in Spearman, TX. He preceded her in death in February of 2003.  Zelma had lived in Skellytown for 50 years prior to moving to Borger three years ago.  She loved to play with her grandkids.

A new school bus

Borger ISD has a new school bus! The bus was purchased with funds awarded from High Plains Resource Conservation and Development. Showing off the new bus are BISD Director of Transportation Kenneth Coleman, BISD Superintendent Chance Welch, BISD Business Manager Faye Hooper, and Borger Chamber of Commerce CEO Beverly Benton.

County teams enjoy success during first month of the season

This week, high school volleyball teams will have been on the court for a month. For the Hutchinson County teams, August has seen its shares of ups and downs. However, all three teams are poised to go into district play looking good and ready compete for a playoff berth.
Since the sluggish start to the season against Bushland and Canyon, the Borger Lady Bulldogs have looked good on the court in sweeps Hereford, Amarillo River Road, Amarillo Highland Park, Perryton, West Texas High and Sanford-Fritch.

Wallace “Wally” Criswell

Wallace “Wally” Criswell, 62, of Baytown, TX was born November 22, 1948 in Fort Worth and passed away Sunday, August 28, 2011 after a brief battle against cancer. He was a U. S. Army veteran.
He enjoyed fishing and was an artist, specializing in acrylic paintings. He had numerous showings, especially in the Borger area.

Redd: Borger EDC can help with pipeline relocation

On August 18th the Borger Economic Development Corporation agreed to provide funds which will be used to move pipelines from an area of land being considered for the future home of a Wal-Mart Super Center.
The EDC Board of Directors approved providing around $250,000 to assist DCP Midstream and local businessman Odis McCellan in rerouting pipeline around a section of land located near the new hospital site between Highway 136 and Carbon Road.

Cornyn: County will receive JAG grant

Hutchinson County was awarded a grant worth $16,098 from the Department of Justice.
According to U.S Senator John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, this grant will help prevent crime based on local needs and conditions.
At a Hutchinson County Commissioner’s Court meeting in July, Chief Deputy James Qualls spoke on behalf of the Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Office and requested permission to apply for the Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) totaling around $16,000.

Sign ups for this year’s bowling leagues are underway

Bowling league sign ups are now underway at Wildcatter’s for bowlers of all ages and skill levels.
For kids and teens, the bowling alley’s youth mixed league will once again run on Saturday mornings.
Adult leagues available are as follows.
Monday night: Church League-Mixed league play
Tuesday morning: Chatterettes-Women only league
Tuesday night: Metropolitan-Men only league
Wednesday night: Automotive-Men only league; Progressive-Women only league
Thursday night: Sundowners-Mixed league play
Friday night: Easymarks-Mixed league play

FPC Lady Plainsmen win matches on Saturday at NMMI Tournament

After the first weekend of the season, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen have a 3-1 overall record by winning both of their matches on Saturday at the NMMI Tournament in Roswell, N.M.
The Lady Plainsmen opened Saturday getting the win over Ranger Junior College in straight sets 25-22, 25-15, 25-19.
In their final match of the tournament, the Lady Plainsmen had their hands full with South Mountain Community College. However the team pulled out the win in five games 24-26, 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 15-11.

Chamber kickoff breakfast set for Sept. 8

The time is quickly approaching for the annual Borger Chamber of Commerce kickoff breakfast.
The breakfast will be held at Dake’s from 7-8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8. The serving line for the full traditional breakfast will begin at 6:45 a.m.
RSVP is required for everyone who plans on attending, and all RSVPs are due to the chamber by Friday, Sept. 2. The cost of the breakfast is $10, and is payable at the door.
Attendance at the breakfast will qualify citizens for a $50 drawing, and the latest Borger Bulldog gear will also be given away as door prizes.
