Crews respond to fire near Electric City

February 27, 2012

A grass fire broke out in the Electric City area on Friday afternoon.
On Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at 1:10 p.m., a grass fire occurred in the bed of the Canadian River at Electric City. The fire resulted in damage to 50 acres. According to Borger Fire Marshal Jerry Langwell, the fire occurred due to electrical power lines.
Borger, Hutchinson County, Fritch, Stinnett, and Crutch Ranch Fire Departments responded to the scene. No injuries were reported. All fire departments left the scene around 6:30 p.m.

FPC hoop teams host Midland College in final home games

Tonight the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen and Lady Plainsmen host Midland College in their final home games for the 2011-12 season. The women’s game will tip off at 5:45 p.m. followed by the men at around 7:30 p.m.

Lady Bulldogs win Sanford-Fritch Tournament title

Despite winning their first two tournament games by a combined score of 31-0, the Borger Lady Bulldogs knew they would face a tough challenge in the championship game of the Sanford-Fritch “Ducks on the Pond” Softball Tournament against district foes Dalhart.
The Lady Bulldogs didn’t keep the Lady Wolves scoreless, but the team continued to have hot bats at the plate by winning the tournament title with a 19-10 win.
The game was a close battle until the Lady Bulldogs found their groove at the plate and started pulling away at the end of the game.

FPC Lady Plainsmen take part in Murray State Festival

The Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen softball team had a busy weekend competing in eight games over three days at the Murray State Festival in Tishomingo, Okla.
Over the three days, the Lady Plainsmen posted a 3-5 record.

The Lady Plainsmen bested Rose State College 5-1 in seven innings on Friday as Janelle Smith hit a home run and drove in two runners.
Ashley Abair was a workhorse on the rubber, pitching seven innings and allowed no earned runs, four hits and no walks while striking out five.

Evalyn (Sheets) Ludden

CLEBURNE – Services for Evalyn (Sheets) Ludden, 87, of Cleburne, TX, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church in Canadian with Rev. John Dorn officiating.
Burial will be in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery in Canadian, TX, under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Canadian, TX.
Evalyn passed away Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, in Burleson, TX.
Evalyn was born January 18, 1925 in Chickasha, OK to the late Mr. Roy Edgar Sheets and Mrs. Ella (Spradling) Sheets.

Bulldogs see mixed results on Thursday in Cavalier Classic

AMARILLO-On day one of the Cavalier Classic Baseball Tournament, the Borger Bulldogs saw mixed results on the field by coming way with a big 12-2 win over the Arbor Academy Lions, but struggling in their 10-5 loss to the Amarillo Palo Duro Dons.

After the Lions took a 0-1 lead in the top of the first inning, the Bulldogs took advantage of Lion pitching woes and errors to score eight runs in the bottom of the first inning,
Colton Hunter and Clay Ellis reached base on singles and would come across home plate on two wild pitches to make it a 2-1 score.

Borger and West Texas High win on first day of tournament

On day one of the Sanford-Fritch “Ducks on the Pond” Softball Tournament, the Borger Lady Bulldogs and West Texas High Lady Comanches won their opening round games setting up a Hutchinson County Showdown in the semi-finals for Friday at 1:00 p.m..
The two teams got their wins in different fashion, as the Lady Bulldogs had no problems beating the Claude Lady Mustangs 15-0 in three innings, while the Lady Comanches squeaked out a 10-9 win over the Sanford-Fritch Lady Eagles Black squad.

Borger Lions Club makes 38 years of pageants possible

Several young ladies will be walking the stage this weekend as contestants at the 38th Annual Miss Tri-City Area Hutchinson County Scholarship Pageant, sponsored by the Borger Noon Lions Club.

Several young ladies will be walking the stage this weekend as contestants at the 38th Annual Miss Tri-City Area Hutchinson County Scholarship Pageant, sponsored by the Borger Noon Lions Club.
The pageant will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at 6:30 p.m in the Frank Phillips College Auditorium. This year’s scholarships awarded for the winners will be $ 500 for West Texas A&M University, $3,135 for Oklahoma Panhandle State University(equivalent of one full academic year waiver), $500 for Amarillo College and $500 for Clarendon College.

Borger PD submits racial profiling report

The Borger Police Department’s racial profiling report for 2011 has been approved by the Borger City Council.
Captain Bruce Roberts of the BPD presented the report to the council at its regular meeting Tuesday. He said BPD, in accordance with the Texas Racial Profiling Law, has been collecting police contact data in compliance with the law.
