On Saturday, over 40 local golfers paired up into 12 golf teams to take part in the Hutchinson County United Way Golf Scramble at the Phillips Golf Course.
Each of the 12 teams posted impressive scores with the winning team âWe Beat the Menâ coming out on top with a score of 56.

From the fresh cut grass to the smell of hot dogs and popcorn in the air, perhaps one of the best days on the sports calendar every year, for many sports fans, is getting out for opening day of the baseball season.
Unfortunately in 2009, opening day for the Amarillo Dillas will go down as one of the most tragic days in sports history in the Texas Panhandle with the passing of Dillas Public Announcer Joe Frank Wheeler just hours before the game.
The Hutchinson County United Way is making plans for its upcoming Day of Caring, and is currently seeking ways in which it can help out the community.
This yearâs event is set for Sept. 17, 2011. According to Teri Hogue of the HCUW, the event truly has a âneighbor helping neighborâ focus.
âThe Day of Caring is a day when volunteers choose to give their time and services to work on a one-time service project in an effort to impact our communityâs needs with tasks that they are unable to perform themselves,â she said.
On Friday night cancer survivors, family members, local organizations and businesses along with community supporters throughout Hutchinson County came out to Huber Park to take part in the 2011 American Cancer Society âRelay For Lifeâ.

No fireworks can be bought or sold in Hutchinson County this year.
Hutchinson County Judge Faye Blanks issued a Declaration of Disaster that will prohibit the sale or use of fireworks. This disaster declaration was signed and approved by Texas Governor Perry Friday, and will be in effect until 7 a.m. July 5, 2011.
Since the beginning of the year, the Hutchinson County has seen less than Ÿ inch of rainfall, and local fire departments have put out over 130 fires as of this point in 2011.

Quick with a warm smile and a big hug, Linda Garrett of Fritch is always in motion. She is a people person, a self-professed âhuggerâ and is a woman of God to her core, and is very active in her church. She is a person who has the ability to see the positive and finds a blessing in every situation that she encounters.
And she is a cancer survivor. This marks the third battle she has waged against the disease and she is just as determined to survive this time as she was the first two times she was diagnosed. And she is also a devoted Relay For Life participant.

There is a farmerâs market coming to town next month that will be open to all buyers and sellers.
It will begin July 1 and be set up every Friday through the summer from 7 a.m. till noon or a little before if farmers sell out.
The Hutchinson County Farmerâs Market is hoping to grow in its second year to provide consumers with an option to buy their vegetables fresh, according to Sandra Duke, Texas AgriLife Extension Service agent.
âWe have plenty of space for vendors, so we encourage individuals with large gardens or farmers to join the Farmerâs Market this year,â she said.

The Borger ISD board of trustees has approved a policy that would require certain employees to live within the city limits.
The action was taken during the boardâs regular Thursday evening, held at the BISD Administration Building.
Under the terms of the new policy, a district employee shall live within the boundaries of the district for the duration of employment for the following positions:
*Superintendent
*Assistant Superintendent
*Executive Director of Personnel
*Business Manager
*Director of Federal Programs and Instruction
*Director of Technology
*Athletic Director
On Saturday evening, two Borger Bulldogs and two Sanford-Fritch Eagles will take part in the 62nd Annual Childress Rotary Greenbelt BowlClassic at Park Stadium in Childress.
Recent Borger High School graduates, receiver/defensive back Michael Morrison and linebacker Dylan Winkle will join recent Sanford-Fritch High School graduate offensive lineman/defensive end Shane Tollis on the North squad. Sanford-Fritch graduate offensive/defensive lineman Tyler Moore will compete on the South squad.
Not every day can a coach from the United States talk about putting on a Coaches Clinic or hosting a basketball camp in another country.
Perhaps due in large part by being an England native, new Frank Phillips College Head Menâs Basketball Coach Chris Hackett is getting that opportunity later this month by putting on a Coaches Clinic and Basketball Day Camp in Stockport, England.
This spring Hackett was named as the new FPC Plainsmen Head Caoch remplacing Vu Phan, who was dismissed from the college after leading the program one year.
