Lady Bulldogs take fifth place in regional tournament

The Borger Lady Bulldogs Golf Team came in fifth place at the 3A Region I Golf Tournament at San Angelo Country Club by shooting a two round total of 412-409-821.
The Lady Bulldogs finished 38 strokes ahead of district rival Pampa who had a score of 426-433-859 and four strokes behind fourth place Sweetwater, who had a team score of 817.
Andrews cruised to the regional title with a 643, finishing 99 strokes ahead of second place Snyder which shot a 742.
Clarice Myers led the Lady Bulldogs by shooting 100-101-201.

SFISD seeks to fill board vacancy

The Sanford-Fritch ISD board of trustees is seeking to fill a vacancy.
Jim McClellan, SFISD Superintendent, said that due to a vacancy on the SFISD board of trustees, the board will be appointing a member of the community to fill the open seat.
“The board would like to encourage anyone who lives within the boundaries of the SFISD and would like to be considered for this appointed position to write or type a letter, no longer than one page, expressing your desire to become a member of the Sanford-Fritch ISD Board of Trustees,” he said.

FPC’s Evans signs with Texas A&M-Kingsville

Frank Phillips College Men’s Basketball player Mike Evans has signed a letter of intent to play for Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Evans was a forward for the Plainsmen the past two seasons. In the 2011-12 season, Evans started 12 games and averaged two points and three rebounds per game. He also averaged 1 block per game, which was third in the league, and did several things for the Plainsmen on the defensive end which did not make its way to the statbook.

Henrietta “Polly” Larkey, 98, of Perryton died Wednesday, April 18.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 21, at the Stinnett Cemetery with Rev. Bill Burkholder officiating and Litch Sparks assisting. Arrangements are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Polly was born on September 24, 1913 to Anderson Steadman Barrett and Bessie Marion (Dean) Barrett in Thomas, NM. She married Elwin “E.W.” Larkey on March 17, 1932 in Clayton, NM. She lived in Hutchinson County from 1926 until 1977 before moving to Perryton in 1977.

Wal-Mart plans fundraisers for CMN

Wal-Mart of Borger is doing its part to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network this year, and has two fundraisers planned in the coming weeks to help make that happen.
The first annual Wal-Mart/Children’s Miracle Network First Annual “Throw For the Kids” Disc Golf Challenge will be held at the Johnson Park Youth Center, 1201 Bulldog Boulevard. The challenge will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012.

Madden and Whitworth advance to 3A State Tournament

On Thursday morning, the Borger Mixed Doubles Tennis Team of Abbie Madden and Alix Whitworth advanced to the 3A State Tennis Tournament by coming in second place in the 3A Region I Tournament in Lubbock.
On Wednesday, the Borger duo won three matches to advance to Thursday’s title match.
After an opening round win, Madden/Whitworth defeated Zevecke/Estes from Alvarado 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, then defeated Lujan/Ochoa from Monahans 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 in the semi-finals.

FPC students remember the Holocaust

On Thursday morning, around 100 Frank Phillips College students gathered in the FPC college library to take part in the Holocaust Day of Remembrance Ceremony.
The ceremony began with the releasing of balloons and the lighting of 60 candles, with each candle representing 100,000 lives which were lost during the Holocaust.
Borger resident Meryl Barnett served as the special speaker for Thursday's ceremony, with the longtime Borger resident sharing about his experience helping to liberate the Dachau labor camp while serving in the Army during World War II.

Mobile Vet Center coming to Borger

A mobile vet center is coming to Borger to provide service for veterans who are dealing with personal and mental difficulties.
The Amarillo Vet Center will have its Mobile Vet Center on hand for veteran outreach from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, April 23, at the Hutchinson County Annex located on Veta Street in Borger. The center is open to all veterans, their families, and the general public.
William R. Donaldson, a counselor with the Amarillo Vet Center, said the purpose of the mobile vet center is to provide education about readjustment counseling services offered at vet centers.

WTHS teachers get pies in the face for a worthy cause

Teachers at West Texas High School got a pie in the face for breast cancer awareness.
In October, the WTHS National Honor Society held fundraisers for breast cancer awareness for its annual service project. They sold pink out t-shirts, bracelets, held bake sales, collected yogurt lids and made a pink pumpkin patch.

Borger man arrested on explicit conduct counts

A Borger man was arrested on explicit conduct charges stemming from 2011 on Tuesday
On March 20, 2011, at the federal courthouse in Amarillo, James Bradley Taylor, 27 years of age, was charged with one count of a visual depiction of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct in federal court.
Later on March 22, 2011, Taylor was charged with one count of attempt of receipt of a visual depiction of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct. And on March 28, 2011, he was charged with his third count for possession of child pornography.
