Roy Lee VanLoon

Roy Lee VanLoon, 78 of Borger, Texas, died on Jan. 5 in Canyon, Texas; he went to live with his Lord and Savior at 4:15 a.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday the 8th at Faith Baptist Church in Fritch Texas with Pastor Don Rice officiating with a graveside service at 1 p.m. on Wednesday the 9th at Belvieu Cemetery in Rotan, Texas. All under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Roy was born on Nov. 11, 1934, to Jess Everett and Lyda Gatewood VanLoon in Rotan, Fisher County, Texas. He married Millicent Sue Hudson on Feb. 12, 1954.

Snack Pack 4 Kids seeing success in Borger

The Snack Pack 4 Kids program is seeing success in the Borger area.
The mission of the program is to end weekend hunger for children living in the Texas panhandle by providing a backpack filled with kid friendly snacks each Friday of the school year. Borger Independent School District is among 15 school districts in the area participating in the program, and has been doing so since late 2012.

Murder charges filed in death of Lefors woman

January 4, 2013

Murder charges have been filed in the death of a woman in Lefors.
On Jan. 3, 2013, Texas Rangers served an arrest warrant for Joshua Keith Rigo, 28, of Amarillo, on the charge of murder, a felony of the first degree, in the death of Kristi Dawn Slatten, 42.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Daniel Hawthorne, Rigo was in custody in the Carson County Jail for the original charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
His bond was set at $300,000 and he remains in custody at the Carson County Jail.

George Wyatt

George Wyatt, 83, of Borger, TX, passed away, Sunday, December 30, 2012.
George Millard Wyatt was born Tuesday, August 20, 1929 in Saint Maurice, LA to Glenn and Audrey (Adams) Wyatt. Mr. Wyatt was a chemist for Phillips Petroleum. He married Shirley Tacker in 1952 at Wheeler, TX.
Mr. Wyatt is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Shirley.

Clarence Harvey Jasper

January 4, 2013

Clarence Harvey Jasper, 87, of Stinnett died Wednesday, January 2, in Amarillo.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday at the Church of Christ in Stinnett with Zeb Sailors, former minister, and Robert Clay, minister officiating. Interment will be at the Stinnett Cemetery under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors.

The citizens of Borger have seen a few freezes, a couple of inches of snow, and temperatures below 20 degrees.
This winter can get really cold if your home isn’t properly prepared.
According to Wes Reeves of Xcel Energy, there are plenty of ways to keep your home warm.

Medicare scams: don’t fall for them

January 4, 2013

An area resident wants to warn fellow citizens about a Medicare scam that she experienced this week.
Delvha Ennis said she received a call around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday from someone claiming to be a Medicare representative.
Ennis said she was told by the man that he was just checking her identification so Medicare could deposit checks for her. He then asked what bank she did business with, and she gave this information.

Officials investigating suspicious death in Lefors

January 3, 2013

(DPS RELEASE) - On Jan. 1, 2013, at approximately 12:20 p.m., the Gray County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call in reference to a residence in Lefors, Texas. Gray County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the location and found a deceased woman, later identified as 42-year-old Kristi Dawn Slatten.
Deputies found evidence of foul play and secured the scene. The Gray County Sheriff’s Department requested that the Texas Rangers assist with the investigation. It was determined that the victim’s Chevrolet Avalanche was missing. A warrant was issued for the stolen vehicle.

Flu: It’s important to be prepared

January 3, 2013

The community should prepare itself for the flu. According to Becky Peery, RN, BSN, infection control nurse at GPCH, the flu is here along with gastroenteritis (vomiting and diarrhea). If you are over the age of six months it isn’t too late to get a flu shot.
Peery advises the community to take extra precautions since theses nasty viruses are around.
“Hand hygiene is the best means to control both,” she said.
