Tri-City Concert Association receives Xcel grant

The Tri-City Concert Association is the recipient of one of several grants being given by the Xcel Energy Foundation.
The amount of the grant being received by the association is $1,000, and will go toward the presentation of a concert by Robert Post, a comedian/actor/puppeteer/ventriloquist to approximately 500 students in third through fifth grades in the Borger Independent School District.
The concert, which is being sponsored by the association, has the goal of enhancing the students' appreciation of the visual/dramatic arts.

Caprock Nursing and Rehab opening this February

Two new faces have joined the Borger community, bringing with them smiles and service to anyone in need of short term rehabilitation, long term care, or just some good food to share!
We need to welcome Scott and Londa Franklin!
Scott is heading the team at the newest rehabilitation facility presently being built on the corner of Roosevelt Street and College Avenue. Caprock Nursing and Rehab will proudly open its doors in February 2013.
Scott Franklin, the administrator who plans to open this state-of-the-art facility, was raised in central Texas, and lived in Amarillo for 15 years.

Building at 11th & Jim Hall catches fire

A local building that housed an illegally operated establishment shut down by law enforcement last month burst into flames on Thursday morning.
Da Cutts at 11th and Jim Hall, which was recently shut down in late October by law enforcement officials for several violations of sales of alcohol without a license, was reported to be on fire at 6 a.m. Thursday.
According to Borger Fire Marshal Jerry Langwell, the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but there are some indications the fire may have been intentionally set.

Practice safety in your Christmas preparations

Holiday decorations, like candles, lights and Christmas trees, add a joyous and festive mood to the holiday season. But when these decorations are not used properly, they can cause fires, injuries and sometimes death.
To prevent these injuries, Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards gave the county a few tips to follow when decorating this year.
“The top three things we see happen most is the misuse of light extension cords, live Christmas trees drying out, and the misuse of electric space heaters,” said Richards.

Deala “Dee” Gunnels, 75, was received into the hands of God, November 28, 2012 while in a Fort Worth hospice facility.
Celebration of Life: 11am Saturday, at Covenant United Methodist Church;3608 Matlock Road, Arlington.
Interment: Llano Cemetery in Amarillo.

Area Basketball News

-The Borger Varsity girls fell behind by 15 at the half to Canadian Tuesday, and could not climb back in it. N. Embers led the Borger scorers with 10 and Prater had 7.
The Borger Varsity boys (0-3) played in Claude and lost 53-40. Newton led the Bulldogs with 14 points, and Embers had 9.
The Fritch Varsity girls also played Claude and lost 40-35. Setliff had 17 points and White 6 for the Lady Eagles.

Rafael Torres Franco

Borger - Rafael Torres Franco, 72, of Borger, died Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at his home.
Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 30, 2012 in the “Garden Of Hope” at Westlawn Memorial Park with Pastor Tim Hall of Grace Church officiating. Services are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. Visitation will be from 5p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

United launches “Together We Can” food drive

November 29, 2012

United Supermarket in Borger is among area United Supermarkets participating in the “Together We Can” Food Drive.
All Amarillo-area United Supermarkets, Market Street and Amigos stores, as well as surrounding stores, will be accepting food and monetary donations as part of the “Together We Can” Food drive. All proceeds will benefit the High Plains Food Bank.
This joint effort of United, Market Street, and Amigos team members and store guests will run through Dec. 8.
