CVS granted variance for alcohol sales

As CVS Pharmacy prepares to move into the Borger area, it will now have permission for the off-premises sale of beer and wine.
During its regular meeting on Tuesday, the Borger City Council approved action to allow CVS Pharmacy to be granted a variance for the off-premises sales of beer and wine at its location at 230 North Cedar.

Isbell files for another term as county commissioner

S.T. “Red” Isbell has filed for another term as County Commissioner, Precinct 3.
He has been a longtime residence of Hutchinson County, moving to the area in 1965. He went to work for J.M. Huber and worked for the company for 31 years.
Isbell and wife Paula attended the First Baptist Church in Stinnett until she became ill. He said they still call it their church home. He was also on the Stinnett school board for 10 years and currently delivers Meals on Wheels in the Stinnett area.

BNH looking for Hutchinson County Heroes

Are you a part of the military that has recently returned home from the conflict in Iraq? We want to hear your story.
The Borger News-Herald will be working on a special section featuring those who served in this conflict from the Hutchinson County area. We would love to either sit down and interview you, or receive entries via email if preferred.

Deadline for election filing moved to Feb. 1 to to

Those wanting to run for county positions still have a chance.
According to Republican Chairman Mary Kay Phelan, the previous deadline for entries on December 12, 2011 has been moved to February 1, 2012.
Running for Hutchinson County Sheriff is Mickey Blackmon, Don Johnson, and James Qualls. Carrie Kimmel has filed to run for Tax Assessor/ Collector, Mike Milner for County Attorney, Larry Coffman for Commissioner- Precinct One. And S.T. “Red” Isbell, Jr. and Nathan Sargent for Commissioner- Precinct Three.

Tommie Lou Parkhurst

Tommie Lou Parkhurst, 62, of Borger was born April 9, 1949 in Mena, Arkansas. She went to heaven to join the loved ones who passed before her on December 31, 2011 in Amarillo, Texas.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at Bible Baptist Church with Rev. Leonard Forsythe officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Park Cemetary. Services are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

Carroll Buxton-Clifton

Carroll Buxton-Clifton, 73, of Borger, died Friday, December 30, 2011 at her home in Borger.
Services will be 2:00 p.m.Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at Fairlanes Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Burwash, Pastor officiating. Interment will follow in the “Garden Of Devotion” at Westlawn Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

Emilio Cruz

Emilio Cruz, 80, of Borger, passed away, Thursday, December 29, 2011.
Emilio C. Cruz was born Friday, August 5, 1932 in Mexico to Emilia Cruz. He was self-employed and did a little bit of everything.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Elvira Cruz and his son, Emilio Cruz Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Trinidad Cruz; three sons, Esbardo Cruz of Pampa, TX, Jesse Cruz of Skellytown, TX and Manuel Cruz of Dalhart, TX; two daughters, Juanita Pena of Pampa, TX and Sylvia Munoz of Pampa, TX; two brothers; one sister; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Borger tangled with Hereford on wrestling mat

January 3, 2012

Monday afternoon the Borger Bulldog wrestling team opened 2012 hosting Hereford at Tex Hanna Gym.
Several of the Bulldog wrestlers were in position to get wins on the mat, but the breaks fell in favor for Hereford who came away with a 51-6 win in the duel.
