January 18th
On Thursday afternoon, the Borger Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors will hear presentations by two local businesses involving expansion projects.
Mike Brandvik of Brandvik Pipe and Equipment and representatives from Global Frontline Solutions will come before the EDC Board with expansion projects.
The EDC Board is expected to discuss and take action on both projects, according to the EDC’s January meeting agenda.
January 17th
A Borger man has been sentenced to 18 years for drug possession.
On Tuesday, Jan. 10, Patrick Fitzhugh Zachary, 40, of Borger, pled guilty and was convicted of Possession of a Controlled Substance, 2nd Degree Felony and was sentenced to 18 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Zachary’s punishment range was enhanced to a 1st degree felony punishment due to a 1997 previous drug conviction.
An arrest was made Friday for possession of drug paraphernalia in Fritch. On Friday, January 13, 2012, the Fritch Police Department arrested Michael Beams, 52, at 300 S. Hoyne in Fritch. After his arrest Beams was charged with a Class C misdemeanor and later released on bond.
Chief of Police Kirk Coker said on Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, other criminal activity was spotted near the house on Hoyne and a warrant was issued for Beams’ arrest. Chief Coker commended his officers for doing outstanding work.
Tonight, the Borger Bulldogs (9-11) open District 1-3A boys basketball play hosting the Perryton Rangers (17-4) starting at 7:30 p.m. at Tex Hanna Gym.
Despite a record that is two games under .500, the Bulldogs have shown a lot of improvement on the court since November and could make some noise in the district standings.
Junior guard Jamon Hearon continues to lead the Bulldogs in scoring, but the team has seen the whole roster get involved, led by seniors Grant Boren and Aaron Smith, along with junior guard Kolter Newton.
On Monday evening, the #10 Odessa College Wranglers escaped the BCAC with an 89-84 win over the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen in the WJCAC opener for both teams.
The Plainsmen held a three point lead, 68-65, with 9:30 left in the second half. Unfortunately, the Wranglers used a 10-2 run to build a five point lead that the Plainsmen were not able to overcome in the final four minutes of the game.
On Monday night, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen could not overcome a slow start in their WJCAC opener to Odessa College losing to the Lady Wranglers, 82-51.
Both the Lady Plainsmen and Lady Wranglers opened the game struggling offensively. But eight turnovers and early foul trouble by the Lady Plainsmen, in the first five minutes, helped Odessa College build a 0-10 lead.
Over the weekend, the Borger Bulldog and Lady Bulldog varsity soccer teams took part in the West Texas Invitational Tournament in Abilene.
On the boys side, the Bulldogs opened the tournament with a 3-1 loss to Abilene Cooper, then dropped two games on Saturday, 1-0 to Abilene Wylie and 4-0 to San Angelo Lake View.
January 16th
The Borger City Council is set to meet this Tuesday.
The council will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2012, in the city council chambers of Borger City Hall, 600 North Main.
Action will be taken to amend the water pricing agreements of the following companies:
a) Sid Richardson Carbon Company – Amendment #7
b) Degussa Engineered Carbons – Amendment #3
On Friday, January 20th the Borger Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs basketball teams will be hosting a “Pink Out” for HOPE for Cancer Awareness during their doubleheader against Pampa.
Free t-shirts will be handed out at the door, while supplies last, and donations will be taken for HOPE for Cancer Awaremess.
During both games, sausage wraps will be served by the Borger Basketball Booster Club in the concession stand.
The girls and boys junior varsity games tip off at 4:30 p.m. The varsity girls game will tip off at 6:30 p.m. followed by the varsity boys at 8:00 p.m.
James Walter Landers Jr., 85, died Thursday, January 12, 2012, in Borger.
No services are scheduled at this time. Cremation is under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
James was born April 2, 1926 in Quanah, Texas to Walter and Verdie Landers. He was one of eight children. Three brothers; Cleston, Horace, Billy Jack Landers; three sisters; Clella Mae Meadows, Josephine Purcell, and Patricia Waldrip, all preceded him in death. His remaining sister Doris Ferguson now resides at the Buffalo Prairie Care Center in Buffalo Missouri.
