Borger man dies in head-on collision

A Borger man died in a head-on collision that occurred Saturday afternoon on Highway 136 in Potter County.
According to Department of Public Safety reports, Levy David Cox, 36, was driving northbound on Texas Highway 136 in a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup. He was close to mile marker 94 and crossed into the southbound lanes for reasons that are not known at this time.
When Cox crossed the lanes, he struck a 2011 Dodge Nitro head on, which was driven by Jackie Don Stapleton, 38, according to reports. Cox was ejected from his pickup and died at the scene of the wreck, authorities said.

Officials respond to motorcycle wreck

Local officials responded to a motorcycle wreck on Sunday afternoon on Highway 152. The wreck was called in at 12:20 p.m., officials were dispatched at 12:22 p.m., and officials were on scene by 12:29 p.m. The victim was taken by ambulance to a LifeStar helicopter and airlifted from the scene. Among those responding were Borger EMS, Borger Fire Department, and the Department of Public Safety. The EOC assisted with traffic control. Identity of abduction suspect revealed

The identity of the suspect involved in an attempted child abduction Wednesday has been revealed.
The Borger Police Department, assisted by Hutchinson County deputies actively promptly checked out several leads generated from public tips. Locations of possible sightings included Dumas, Fritch, and various Borger locations. Lt. Anthony Griffin of the Borger PD said all of these leads were immediately acted upon and ruled out within a matter of hours.

UPDATE: Suspect in custody following attempted child abduction

August 8, 2012

The Borger Police Department has a suspect in custody after an attempted abduction on Wednesday afternoon.
The BPD announced the news late Wednesday evening, and more information will be available in tomorrow’s edition of the BNH. The information will be posted on the BNH web site as soon as details are available.
On Wednesday, Aug. 8, at around 1:10 p.m., Borger police officers responded to the Wal-Mart Department Store on West Wilson Street in Borger in reference to the attempted abduction, according to Lt. Anthony Griffin of the BPD.

Park rec program celebrates successful year

August 7, 2012

The City of Borger’s Park Recreation program has concluded another year on a successful note.
Annadon Keys, Johnson Park Youth Center supervisor, said the attendance of the program has almost doubled since last season, going from 233 children to 441 children in only a short year.

Former Borger Man Sentenced to 20 Years for 3 counts of Indecency With a Child by Sexual Contact

August 6, 2012

This morning, William Shane Downs, age 43 and formerly of Borger, pled guilty to three counts of Indecency With a Child by Sexual Contact which occurred between May of 2000 and January of 2003 in Borger. Following Downs’ plea, Judge David Gleason, 316th District Court Visiting Judge, sentenced Downs to twenty years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Further, Downs was ordered to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison for the remainder of his life. Downs was indicted for these offenses by a Hutchinson County Grand Jury in March of 2011.

Council to act on feasibility study for events center

August 6, 2012

A feasibility study for a new potential events center in Hutchinson County is ready for review.
During its regular meeting Tuesday, the Borger City Council will act on the receipt of a feasibility study for a potential events center from CS&L and schedule a work session to formally discuss the proposed project. The council meeting is set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 7, in the city council chambers of Borger City Hall, 600 North Main.

Fire destroys home in harbor area

August 6, 2012

A fire completely destroyed a mobile in the Lake Meredith Harbor area early Friday morning.
The home, which had an address of 135 Prairie Drive, was occupied by two adults, one of them being Birtie Herdwick, and five children.
The man of the house woke up at 4 a.m. and saw smoke inside the home. A fire was burning inside a closet in the home. He got his family out immediately.
The Fritch Fire Department and Fritch EMS responded to the scene around 4:17 a.m. The fire spread and engulfed the entire structure, which was a mobile home.

BPD reports can be purchased online

August 6, 2012

Borger Police Department accident reports can now be purchased in one of two ways.
Those needing the reports can either come by BPD headquarters or now purchase them online, according to Lt. Anthony Griffin of the BPD.
BPD has teamed up with an online records provider to make this possible. Traditionally, people would have to come by BPD headquarters, pay a $5 cash fee for the report and wait three to 10 days to come back and pick it up.
