WTAMU Researchers Seeking Volunteers for Research on Autism Spectrum Disorder

CANYON, Texas—Poor social communication and repetitive behaviors have been the best source for pinpointing autism spectrum disorder, but researchers at West Texas A&M University are looking at another investigative tool that could provide a more objective measure in diagnostic reliability.

Xcel Energy power supply improves, conservation still encouraged

Xcel Energy had a large generating unit offline, and some concerns about another unit. The company declared an energy alert for its Texas-New Mexico system yesterday, but got through the peak of the day in good shape. The generator in question came back online last evening and is approaching full load. Barring any unforeseen maintenance issues, it expects to be in better condition today. Should that situation change, Xcel Energy would re-issue the energy alert.

Hypnotist brings skills to Borger Rotary Club

An Amarillo hypnotist brought his skills to the Borger Rotary Club Tuesday afternoon.
Gerry Kelly, who owns Hypnosis Works in Amarillo, said hypnosis has applications in a lot of other areas beyond the field of entertainment.
He said over the last 10 years, he has devoted his time to hypnosis and using it to help people better themselves. He said he sees people for all kinds of problems daily, and said he believes hypnosis is a quicker alternative to some of the more extensive forms of treatment out there.

BCT set to present “Cookin’ With Gus”

Boomtown Community Theater on Main Street is gearing up for another play: “Cookin’ with Gus.”
BCT is planning to run the show on August 9, 10, and 11 (days may vary) at 7 p.m.
Cost is $18 for dinner and the show. Dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. and doors will open at 6 p.m.
Gussie Richardson is a famous food columnist and cookbook author. Her agent comes to tell her she’s been offered her own daily television show.

Johnson wins county sheriff's race

The Hutchinson County voters have spoken.
Don Johnson has been voted the new sheriff of the county. According to vote totals posted by, Johnson won with 1,720 votes (62 percent of the vote) compared to Mickey Blackmon’s 1,061 votes for a total of 38 percent of the vote.
Vote totals from the Hutchinson County Clerk’s office were not available as of press time today.
