John Aderson Warren

John Aderson Warren, 82, of Borger, died July 7, 2012 in Amarillo at the VA Hospital.
At his request, no services will be held. His ashes will be scattered at the family ranch in Wheeler County.
John was born at home on May 18, 1930 in Boynton, OK and weighed in at 3 pounds. He moved to Borger at age 4 and lived with his family in Huber Camp. He attended and graduated from Borger High School in 1947.
John was a member of the BHS Choir and at age 16 had his own radio show “The Johnny Warren Show” on KHUZ where he sang “crooner” songs to his audience.

Lucille Parkhurst

Lucille Parkhurst, 88, of Stinnett, passed away, Thursday, July 5, 2012 in Dumas, TX.
Mittice Lucille (Holland) Parkhurst was born Sunday, September 23, 1923 in Parks, TX to Hardy and Winnie (Welch) Holland. Mrs. Parkhurst was a homemaker. She married Clifford Perry Parkhurst on January 8, 1943 at the First Christian Church of Borger, TX.
Mrs. Parkhurst is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Clifford.

Area highway patrol officials honored in Austin

Area highway patrol officials were recently honored in Austin for their efforts.
The Highway Patrol Sergeant Area based in the Panhandle received a Unit Citation in late June for its successful efforts in criminal and drug interdiction. The department currently monitors six categories of data to track drug and currency seizures.
In 2011, troopers in the area led the state in four of those categories, including the number of cases, total currency seized, cocaine seized and other substances seized.

Xcel Energy awards grant to Frank Phillips College

Frank Phillips College was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from Xcel Energy.
The grant was made possible through the Education focus area for Xcel Energy’s corporate giving, which is part of the company’s effort to support nonprofit agencies providing services in towns and cities served by Xcel Energy.
The college plans to use the funds from the grant for lab equipment to be used in the Instrumentation and Electrical Program. The new equipment will allow students to receive experiences and training in the lab in line with the expectations of business and industry employers.

Farmer's Market is underway!!!

Now is your chance to gather fresh foods from the Hutchinson County Farmer’s Market.
The market is open for business every Friday from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. or sooner if farmers sell out.
The market is located in the 500 block of Weatherly (one block east of Main Street) and is open to all community buyers and sellers.
Stands will consist of a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, homemade jams, breads, and assorted fruit juices.

It's time to party Stinnett style!

The Stinnett Celebration is set to kick off September 6, 2012.
This includes the community picnic at the Stinnett City Park before the lighting of the big “WT” at 6 p.m.
On September 7, residents will gather for the West Texas homecoming game, and on September 8, the parade and festivities will take place.
The parade lineup will be at 10 a.m. and the parade begins at 11 a.m. on Main Street. This year’s theme is “Home is Where the Heart is.”
There will also be a horseshoe tournament held by Helen’s Kids.

Cooking pot cause of Fritch fire

A home kitchen was the cause of a fire in the 300 block of Calle Questa in Fritch Thursday night.
According to Fritch Fire Chief Ed Adamson, the fire was caused by a cooking pot left on in the kitchen.
“A significant amount of the structure has smoke damage. The kitchen area was totally destroyed but the rest of the structure was in good shape,” said Adamson.
Fritch Fire Department was called out to the scene around 7:30 p.m. No injuries were reported.
