High Plains Helping Hand gets a special visit!

The High Plains Food Bank food truck made a stop in Borger two weeks ago.
Amarillo’s High Plains Food Bank, a non-profit organization that collects and distributes donated surplus food to agencies in the Texas Panhandle, delivered a lot of “freebies” and food to High Plains Helping Hand of Borger. These are items donated from area grocers such as fruits and vegetables, milk and eggs, breads and sweets and other items.

Indictment returned in drug ring

There have been new developments in a case involving an area drug ring.
A 23-count indictment was returned Tuesday by a federal grand jury in Amarillo, Texas, that charges eight residents of the Texas panhandle with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine, and other substantive felony drug offenses, announced U.S. Attorney Sarah R. Saldaña of the Northern District of Texas.

All-star inspires through adversity

WOODROW — The final play of the Greater West Texas Baseball Coaches Association Class 3A-4A all-star game, played Sunday at Cooper, certainly won’t be stored among baseball’s greatest highlights.
A simple putout at first base to end a lopsided exhibition game isn’t the sort of sequence that will have Cooperstown calling to collect the details. But then you discover the story of the player who grasped that final, seemingly meaningless, out in his glove, and the play becomes pretty incredible after all.

PERRYTON - Marlon W. Wilcox, 54, died Sunday, June 3, 2012.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7, 2012, at Harvest Time Assembly of God Church with Rev. Jeff Hinshaw and Rev. Scott Barton officiating.
Burial will be in Ochiltree Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, Perryton, TX.

FRITCH - Bea Worthey, 85, of Fritch, died Saturday June 2, 2012, at her home.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2012 at the First Southern Baptist Church in Fritch with Rev. Darrell Trout of Harvest Time Church of Midland officiating, and Pastor Justin Unwin of the Fritch Assembly of God assisting. Interment will follow in the garden of “Serenity” at Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 pm. at Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch.

Louis Cobb, 80, of Borger, passed away, Sunday, June 3, 2012 in Borger.
Louis Cobb was born November 26, 1932 in Texola, Ok. to Louis Cobb and Opal McCorkle. Mr. Cobb was a minister of the gospel preaching in many different Church Of Christ churches throughout the country. He was a loving man who enjoyed meeting and ministering to people. Louis married Ema Lou Miller on June 11, 1954 in Texola, Ok.
Mr. Cobb is preceded in death by his parents.

Officials cracking down on wire burning

County officials are cracking down on wire burning.
According to Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards, wire burning pollutes the air with toxic fumes. In order to keep the air clear from pollution, county officials will enforce laws more regularly from the Health and Safety Code of Texas as a deterrent to copper thieves. The Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Office, Fire Marshal’s Office, and County Attorney have joined together with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to stop wire burning and decrease theft.

Borger EMS puts new ambulance into service

Borger EMS has officially put a new ambulance in service.
Mike Barter, director of the EMS, said the ambulance is a new 2012 Chevy diesel, and is manufactured by Wheelcoach, the largest ambulance manufacturer in the United States.
He said the ambulance is replacing the old 2003 model with 183,000 miles on it. The new ambulance has LED lights, which are brighter and will have less stress on the motor.

Caller receives reward for Whitmire tip

The Crime Stoppers has decided to reward an individual who called in a tip leading to the arrest of Matthew Whitmire.
Lt. Anthony Griffn of the Borger Police Department said that during the regular Crime Stoppers board meeting in the month of May, the board unanimously voted to award $1,000 to the anonymous individual who called in the tip to Crime Stoppers regarding the whereabouts of this individual, leading to his arrest. The money was later awarded to this person.

Borger city council to consider land rezoning

June 4, 2012

Rezoning of land to be used for the construction of a new Wal-Mart Supercenter will be one of the action items at the upcoming meeting of the Borger City Council.
The council will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2012, in the city council chambers of Borger City Hall, 600 North Main.
Action will be taken to conduct a public hearing to allow for citizen comment on a request to rezone a 19.773 acre tract of land in Section 23, Block “Y”, Arnold & Barrett-Morris Cummings Survey, Hutchinson County, from Estate and Agricultural (EA) to a commercial zoning district.
